Toledo Mud Hens News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Andrew Knapp went 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Toledo Mud Hens fell to the Iowa Cubs, 10-2, on Friday night (May 12) at Principal Park.
Brenan Hanifee (0-2) made the start for the Mud Hens, while Nick Neidert (3-2) took the mound for the Cubs.
After the Mud Hens were held to just one hit and no runs in the top of the first inning, Jake Slaughter hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning, driving in Darius Hill after his leadoff single. Edwin Rios followed up with a solo shot later in the inning, giving the Cubs an early 3-0 lead.
The Mud Hens threatened to score in the top of the fourth inning with a double by Knapp, but he was left on base after both Andre Lipcius and Jonathan Davis were set down.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Cubs third baseman Jared Young scored on a throwing error by Justyn-Henry Malloy, extending Iowa's lead to 4-0.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, Codi Heuer replaced Neidert on the mound for the Cubs. Toledo took advantage, with Parker Meadows and Tyler Nevin reaching base with a walk and a double, respectively. Knapp drove both runners in with a two-RBI single, cutting the deficit to 4-2.
The Cubs answered with a two-run home run from Young in the bottom of the sixth after Braden Bristo replaced Hanifee on the mound. Sergio Alcantara followed up with a home run of his own, stretching the Cubs' lead to 7-2.
After a scoreless seventh inning, Alcantara hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in another run for the Cubs. Hill followed up with an RBI double, and a sacrifice fly for Tauchman scored Alcantara to cap off a three-run eighth inning for Iowa, growing the lead to 10-2.
Despite a single from Michael Papierski in the top of the ninth, the Mud Hens were held scoreless, closing out a 10-2 loss. Neidert was credited with the win while Hanifee took the loss for the Mud Hens.
Up next, the Mud Hens will continue their series with Cubs on Saturday night (May 13) at Principal Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:08 p.m.
