Clinton, IA - Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney kept the Kane County offense off-balance for 7.0 innings and the Clinton bats struck for three runs in the sixth inning as the LumberKings defeated the Cougars 4-2 at Alliant Energy Field.

Gillheeney (W, 5-6) tied a career-high in innings pitched and struck out six while limiting the Cougars to two runs (one earned) on three hits. Still, the LumberKings trailed 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth.

Facing right-hander Rob Gilliam, Vinnie Catricala started the rally with a single to center. Tim Morris then singled through the right side to put runners at the corners, and Brandon Bantz tied the game with a liner to right-center. James Jones would load the bases on a single to left, setting the stage for Mario Martinez.

Fresh off the disabled list and playing for the first time since June 11, Martinez lifted a towering fly ball towards the line in left. Cougars' left-fielder Rashun Dixon gathered and fired home, but Morris tagged and scored for a 3-2 Clinton lead. Later in the inning, Bantz came home on a wild pitch by Gilliam for the 4-2 advantage.

Gilliam (L, 5-6) lost despite just four runs (three earned) over 6.0 innings. He walked none and struck out eight. Right-hander Connor Hoehn pitched 2.0 scoreless innings in relief for the Cougars.

After Gillheeney's exit, right-hander Daniel Cooper (H, 2) pitched a scoreless eighth and closer Brandon Josselyn (S, 9) struck out the side in order in the ninth.

Jones led all hitters, going 3-for-4 and falling just a home run shy of the cycle. Bantz finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI as well for the LumberKings, who finish the six-game homestand at 4-2.

The LumberKings (4-2) head to the road to take on Cedar Rapids (3-3) tomorrow night. First pitch from Perfect Game Field is scheduled for 6:35 PM. Left-hander Nick Czyz (1-0, 0.68) will make his second start of the year for the Kings. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
