Homestand Notes

First homestand of season's second half kicks off Thursday: The Cougars open a six-game homestand tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. against the Peoria Chiefs. Thursday and Friday evening's games precede a busy holiday weekend that includes patriotic fireworks shows following games on Saturday (July 3) and Sunday (July 4). Pre-game autograph sessions are part of both evening's fun, as well as chances to run the bases following each game. Birdzerk will perform his between-innings antics on Saturday, while the Jesse White Tumblers display their high-flying act after Sunday's game. Tickets for both dates are going quickly, but are still available at (630) 232-8811 or at www.kccougars.com.

Holiday Eats: Fans with an appetite should look no further than Elfstrom Stadium this weekend. For the July 3 game this Saturday, fans can enjoy an All-You-Can-Eat Rooftop Picnic on the Pepsi rooftop patio. The spread includes chef specialties such as prime rib and pork chops along with potatoes, salads, draft beer, soda and water. The rooftop picnic is also available for Thursday and Friday during this homestand. Fans can visit www.kccougars.com to view a complete menu or to make reservations, which are required. Fans may also call (630) 232-8811 to do the same.

And for the 4th this Sunday, the Cougars are hosting a Holiday Picnic. Grilled steaks, chicken breasts, roasted sweet corn, salads, draft beer, soda and water will be served, among many other dishes. Attendees will enjoy the buffet and game from picnic table seating on the outfield deck. Reservations are required and can be made online or at (630) 232-8811.

Special Offers for July start tomorrow: The Cougars are introducing several new promotions and ticket offers during the season's second half, including a pair of promotions before this weekend's Independence Day celebration. Tomorrow night, hot dogs will be $1 at the concessions stands. Dollar Dog Days will also take place on July 14 this month. Friday's 7 p.m. game will offer half-price tickets for all fans. The ticket offer is good for box, reserved and lawn tickets and can be ordered at www.kccougars.com, by phone, or in person during business hours.

Several other offers are on the docket for this month, including free box, reserved, or lawn tickets for kids 10 and under on Sunday 7/11, Thursday 7/15 and Sunday 7/18. The Cougars are also introducing a "More than 4 and score" promotion on July 16, which offers a complementary ticket for fans who purchase more than four (good for box, reserved or lawn tickets).

Fans can view a list of this month's new ticket offers and promotions at http://www.kccougars.com/20100629specialoffers.html.

Peanut-Free Night set for July 14: The Cougars are hosting their 4th annual Peanut-Free Night at Elfstrom Stadium on Wednesday, July 14. The 6:30 p.m. game will be free of peanuts and peanut-related products at the concessions stands, and is an opportunity for families with children who have peanut allergies to safely attend a Cougars game. Fans, staff and players of both teams will abstain from these products on that night.

Team Notes

Second Half Begins: The Cougars opened the season's second half last Friday and are finishing a six-game road trip in eastern Iowa this evening. Entering play on Wednesday, the Cougars are 2-3 in the second half and aiming for a strong summer push in order to qualify for the Midwest League playoffs. Roster moves of late include a pair of Cougars who were assigned to Short-A Vancouver: infielder Nino Leyja and pitcher Anvioris Ramirez. A not-so-new face was recently added to the Cougars' roster in infielder Jason Christian (5th Rd, 2008), who had been through a rehabilitation stint for a wrist injury. Christian, a 2009 Midwest League All-Star with the Cougars, opened the season at Class-A Advanced Stockton and made his Cougars debut towards the end of the 2008 season.

All-Star Recap: A trio of Cougars, Max Stassi, Ian Krol and Connor Hoehn, took part in last week's Midwest League All-Star Game, which was hosted by the Fort Wayne TinCaps last Tuesday. Pitcher Ian Krol pitched 2/3 of an inning while fellow pitcher Connor Hoehn opened the home half of the eighth inning and retired the lone batter he faced. Catcher Max Stassi, an All-Star reserve, went 1-for-2 with a single in the ninth inning.

Nearly two for the price of one: The Cougars endured their longest game of the season this past Sunday, a 4-3 loss to Quad Cities that ended in the 16th inning and took 5 hours and 22 minutes to complete. Position player Leonardo Gil relieved A.J. Huttenlocker to open the home half of the 16th inning and took the loss, although he struck out one batter.

Extra Bases: Outfielder Tyreace House has reached base safely for 27 consecutive games - one away from the longest streak in the league this season...House and Rashun Dixon are each batting .364 over their last five games while fellow outfielder Myrio Richard is even hotter, batting .381 over the last five...pitcher Ian Krol is 3rd among league pitchers in ERA (1.98)...infielder Michael Richard ('08 Cougar, older brother of current Cougar Myrio) was traded this week to the White Sox and assigned to Class-A Kannapolis of the South Atlantic League ...the Astros signed free agent Michael Affronti, an '07 Cougar who was a Midwest League All-Star that season. Affronti was assigned by the Astros to Double-A Corpus Christi.
