
Kernels Snap Streak Against Snappers, 1-0

Beloit, WI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels snapped a five game losing streak to the Beloit Snappers by the score of 1-0 on Wednesday night in Beloit. Kernel pitchers Tyler Skaggs, Tyler Kehrer and Johnny Hellweg combined to shut out the Snappers and hold them to five hits.
Skaggs (6-3) allowed two hits and struck out two over five innings of work for the win and Kehrer allowed three hits and struck out one over three innings. Hellweg worked around a walk and struck out two in the ninth for his eighth save.
The Kernels scored the only run of the game in the fifth inning as Mike Trout reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a double by Matt Long. Michael Wing went 2-4 with a double as the Kernels were held to six hits in the game. Trout helped preserve the shutout, throwing out Josmil Pinto on a relay through Jean Segura and Carlos Ramirez tagged Pinto out.
Beloit starter Brad Stillings (7-4) held the Kernels to a run on five hits and struck out two over six innings. James Beresford and Josmil Pinto combined for four of the Snappers five hits.
The Kernels finished their six game road trip at 3-3, and now open a six game home stand on Thursday, July 1st with three games against the Clinton LumberKings, the MWL affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. It's a 100.7 The Fox Thirsty Thursday where 12 oz. draft beer is just $1.50 and bottled soda and water is just two dollars. Gates open at 5:30 pm and first pitch is set for 6:35 pm.
