DAYTON, Ohio - With the bases loaded, Nick Schumacher induced a game-ending soft line drive to preserve a 6-5 TinCaps win over the Dayton Dragons, Wednesday at Fifth Third Field. The win gave Fort Wayne a series victory over the Dragons.

LHP Mike Watt put together another strong outing, allowing two runs (one earned) in six innings of work. Nate Freiman cracked three hits and piled up three RBIs.

The TinCaps jumped ahead in the top of the third inning. With two outs, Dayton RHP Tim Crabbe plunked Jeudy Valdez to load the bases for Jason Hagerty, who drew a run-scoring walk. Freiman followed by bouncing a two-run single to left to make it 3-0.

In the fifth, Danny Payne lined a solo homer over the right-field wall. Later in the frame, Freiman singled to right to drive in Valdez and push the advantage to 5-0.

The Dragons rallied from there, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the sixth: one on a leadoff home run by Tommy Nurre and the other when Henry Rodriguez stole third and scored when the throw went into left field to cut it to a 5-2 margin.

In the seventh, Josh Garton tripled off the wall in left-center and scored on a groundout.

The TinCaps loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the eighth but did not score. In the ninth, they manufactured a run as Rico Noel was hit by a pitch, stole second and later scored on a Valdez groundout, plating an insurance run.

In the bottom of the ninth, Chase Weems bounced a two-run single into center field to make it a 6-5 game and put runners at second and third with one out. Schumacher struck out Nurre and intentionally walked Didi Gregorius to load the bases, then Ryan LaMarre hit a soft liner to second to end the game.

Watt improved to 4-4 with the win; Schumacher notched his 16th save. Dayton RHP Tim Crabbe (1-1) took his first loss of the year.

Fort Wayne evened its record at 3-3 in the second half, 39-37 overall. Dayton fell to 1-5, 31-44 for the year.

The TinCaps open a three-game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) Thursday at 8:05 p.m. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula (3-2) goes to the hill opposite Bowling Green LHP Kyle Lobstein (5-3).
