South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium started with a celebration but ended on a sour note. South Bend Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley's number 51 was retired before the game, but his team lost 15-3 to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The loss marks the largest margin of defeat for South Bend this season.

Haley is the fifth person to have his number retired by the South Bend franchise. After spending 1991, 1992, and 1995 as hitting coach for South Bend, Haley returned to the area in 2005 to manage the Silver Hawks and led the franchise to its third Midwest League championship. In his five-plus seasons as Silver Hawk skipper, Haley has amassed 408 wins in South Bend and is only 11 shy of reaching 500 for his minor league career.

Haley joins the company of Jackie Robinson (42), Jim Reinebold (4), Rick Patterson (12), and Tony Franklin (18) by having his number retired in South Bend. Reinebold was a long-time high school coach in the South Bend area before serving on the South Bend field staff from 1989 through 1995. Patterson managed the South Bend White Sox in 1989 and 1990, leading the franchise to its first championship in '89. Franklin won a championship as skipper for South bend in 1993.

Any positive feelings generated by the ceremony were quickly erased as the Whitecaps scored six runs in the first inning. Randy Rodriguez (LP, 0-2) lasted only 0.2 of an inning, allowing the first six Whitecaps of the game to reach base. Rafael Quezada (ND) relieved Rodriguez in the first and allowed three runs of his own in the third, which increased West Michigan's lead to 9-0.

South Bend got on the board with three runs in the third against Whitecap starter Giovanni Soto (ND). Soto hit Victor Estevez with a pitch before walking Bobby Borchering and Matt Davidson to load the bases. After throwing one pitch to Ramon Castillo, Soto left the game with an arm injury and was relieved by Richard Zumaya (WP, 1-0). Castillo extended his hitting streak to seven by doubling home Estevez and Borchering, while Davidson scored on a groundout by Alberto Diaz to make the game 9-3.

West Michigan scored two runs off Bradin Hagens (ND) in the fifth to extend the lead. After Brian Budrow (ND) threw 1.1 scoreless innings, utility player David Narodowski (ND) made his pitching debut by throwing a perfect eighth. Starting shortstop Victor Estevez then came in and gave up four runs in the ninth before being relieved by Narodowski, who recorded the final out of the inning.

The Silver Hawks open a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) Thursday night at 7:30 PM with Fourth of July Fireworks to follow. RHP Scottie Allen (2-2, 5.25 ERA) starts for South Bend while Lansing counters with RHP Ryan Tepera (7-2, 3.04 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
