Wheeling Nailers News Release
READING, PA- For the second time in as many starts, Patrick Killeen was perfect in goal for the Wheeling Nailers, as he stopped all 28 shots he faced on Wednesday night at Sovereign Center. On the offensive side, Killeen was helped by Denver Manderson's two goals, as well as a three-point night by Nick Petersen, as the Nailers took care of business, 5-0, against the Reading Royals.
After a scoreless opening period, the Nailers broke the deadlock at the 2:16 mark of the second. Andrew Hotham broke up a centering feed in his own zone, leading to transition the other way. Nick Petersen slid a pass through to Peter Lenes, who skated in and put a shot into the top corner from the bottom of the right circle. A little more than four minutes later, Wheeling added to the lead, while playing on the power play. Nick Petersen tossed a pass out to Denver Manderson, who moved into the slot, and beat Jussi Rynnas with a low wrist shot. With 2:35 left in the middle frame, Manderson netted his second goal of the evening, pouncing on the rebound of Brian Day's initial shot.
Early in the third period, the Nailers added insurance. Cody Chupp's wrist shot from the left circle put Wheeling ahead 4-0 at the 26-second mark of the final stanza, and Nick Petersen gave the contest its 5-0 final score, when his third point of the evening found the twine.
In goal, Patrick Killeen picked up his second straight shutout, turning aside all 28 shots he faced for the Nailers. Jussi Rynnas made his ECHL debut in goal for the Royals, and took the loss, allowing five goals on 29 shots, before turning the crease over to Karel St. Laurent, who made 12 saves in relief.
The Nailers and Royals will meet up again on Friday night, when the two teams travel to WesBanco Arena for a 7:35 face-off.
