Kuhn Outduels Roy in Idaho Victory

January 25, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

(Boise, ID) - Jerry Kuhn stopped all 35 shots he faced, including an open, point blank attempt from the right edge of the crease in the final thirty seconds, to out-duel Olivier Roy Wednesday night, leading the Idaho Steelheads to a 1-0 win.

The battle of goaltenders was witnessed by 3,858 fans at CenturyLink Arena.

Neither team scored in a relatively uneventful first period, but the two teams geared up in the second period. Idaho got on the board at the 3:46 mark when his shot beat Olivier Roy to make it 1-0. Off an Ian Lowe offensive-zone faceoff win, Tyson Hobbins sent the puck back to Case at the blue line, who shot from the right point. The puck zipped through traffic and inside the far post for Case's second of the year and first goal ever in front of the home fans in Boise.

From there, it was a goaltender clinic. Both goaltenders - Roy for Stockton and Jerry Kuhn for Idaho - made save after save. Kuhn's outstretched leg pad denied one Stockton shot from the bottom of the left-hand circle, so Roy countered with a nifty leg save to deny an Idaho scoring chance in the second period.

After a strong start to the third period for Idaho, one where Roy made two big saves on an Idaho power play, Stockton gained some momenetum and peppered Kuhn for 21 third-period shots. The Idaho goaltender stood tall, though, answering every Thunder challenge.

The biggest challenge came inside the final 20 seconds. With the Stockton net pulled for an extra attacker, the Thunder's leading goal-scorer, Kevin Baker, stationed himself on the right-hand edge of the crease. The puck found its way to him with a clean look, but Kuhn was able to slide over and smother the attempt. Good defensive-zone work by Idaho's Cody Purves prevented another clean look by the Thunder as the clock ran out and Kuhn had his third shutout of the season.

With the win, Idaho (19-19-3) inched back ahead of Stockton (18-18-4) in the ECHL's Western Conference standings.

Kuhn finished with 35 saves, while Roy stopped 30 of 31 in the loss. Both teams came up empty on the power play for the second consecutive night, with Idaho going 0-3 and Stockton going 0-4.

Idaho is home again on Friday night to host the Utah Grizzlies on Marty Flichel Bobblehead Doll giveaway night. Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office (208.331.TIXS) or by logging on to www.idahosteelheads.com.
