January 25, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL (16-18-3-338, 3rd Atlantic Division), affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, were defeated by the Wheeling Nailers (22-14-2-147, 2nd Atlantic Division), 5-0, at Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. The Royals were unable to break through on Wheeling goaltender, Patrick Killeen, who registered his second consecutive shutout, as the Royals suffered through the team's second shutout of the season.

Royals' goaltender Jussi Rynnas (loss, 0-1-0-0, 24/29 in 42:21) sustained the loss in his first start in the ECHL. Karel St. Laurent (no decision, 12/12 in 17:39) came on in substitution and stopped each of the twelve shots he faced down the stretch. Wheeling's Patrick Killeen (win, 13-9-2-1, 28/28) registered his third win in seven decisions against the Royals. Reading's power play was held off the board for the sixth time in the last seven games (0-5). Wheeling broke through on their second power play chance of the game to build a two-goal lead (1-6).

After a scoreless first, the Nailers broke through 2:16 into the second period, when Peter Lenes-a left-handed shot-broke into the Royals end with speed down the right wing side. Lenes ripped a perfectly placed snap shot from low in the right circle high short side on Rynnas for his thirteenth of the year and what would prove to be the game winner.

The Nailers built the lead to 2-0 with a power play goal 6:25 into the second. Nick Peterson slipped a pinpoint pass from behind the Royals' net to the high slot, where Denver Manderson stepped in from the right point to take control. Manderson fired low stick side for his tenth of the year. Manderson bagged his second of the night with 2:35 remaining in the second. Brian Day fired off the right wing wall. The puck hit the upper body of Rynnas, fluttered into the air, and fell to the left side of the crease, where a waiting Manderson punched it in.

Twenty-six seconds into the third, the Nailers took a 4-0 lead, when Cody Chupp fired from the mid-slot. His shot went off the stick of a Reading defender and fluttered over the right shoulder of Rynnas for Chupp's tenth of the year. Nick Peterson added further insult to injury 2:21 into the third, when he ripped a bullet off the left face-off dot across the body of Rynnas bar-and-in for his first of the year-and third point of the game-in his first ECHL game of the season. Reading was unable to muster much down the stretch-generating only eight shots in the final period-as the team fell to 5-12-1-2 at the Sovereign Center this season.

The Royals now head out on a six game road trip starting on Friday night (January 27, 2011 @ 7:35 pm) at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia, where the team will take on the Nailers for the eighth time this year. The game night broadcast on Friday will start at 7:05 pm with the Red Robin Gourmet Burger Pre-Game Warm-up Show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Reading. Streaming audio is available free of charge courtesy of America One through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. As with all Royals' road games this season, Friday's game will be televised locally in Berks County Pennsylvania on BCTV courtesy of Boscov's Travel and the Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines.
