Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels returned the favor of a DH sweep to the Burlington Bees as they took game two of Monday's DH, 7-1, at Community Field in Burlington.
A trio of Kernels pitchers, Vladimir Veras, Barret Browning and Aaron Cook held the Bees to three hits and a sacrifice fly, while striking out eight. Browining got the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
The Kernels struck for seven runs over the first two innings as Matt Sweeney was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI. Ryan Mount was 3 for 4 and Chris Pettit was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Abel Nieves was 2 for 3 with two runs scored.
Veras was called up from extended spring training today to take the place of Sean O'Sullivan, who was placed on the DL with a lower back strain. Veras walked three and struck out three and allowed a run on one hit over three innings pitched.
Burlington starter Jim Wladyka allowed seven runs on six hits and issued four walks over two innings pitched to take the loss. Joe Dickerson hit a sacrifice fly off Veras in the bottom of the first to account for the Bees only run.
