Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

Brandon Buckman went 5-for-8 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Swing of the Quad Cities to a doubleheader sweep and a series sweep over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday evening at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. After winning game one, 13-5, the Swing were aided by a controversial call in the nightcap to pull off the 3-2 win, their seventh consecutive victory.

Quad Cities (34-24) ran their winning streak to seven games with the victory while moving to within 1.5 games of first-place Beloit and one game of second-place Clinton, both of which lost on Tuesday. Wisconsin (17-40) allowed the game-winning run to score in game two on a call that initially went in their favor before being reversed by the umpiring crew.

The game was tied at 2-2 when the winning run crossed the plate in controversial fashion in the top of the sixth. Men were at first and second with two away when Tommy Pham hit a bouncer that was misplayed by the Wisconsin shortstop. Baserunner Luke Gorsett rounded third and tried to score ahead of the throw home, but was called out when umpire Alex Ortiz ruled that catcher Jair Fernandez held on to the ball.

Swing manager Keith Mitchell immediately raced towards the plate to argue, and after a brief meeting the umpires reversed the call, ruling that Fernandez dropped the ball. Gorsett's run infuriated Wisconsin manager Jim Horner, as well as the Timber Rattlers' fans, as it gave the Swing a decisive 3-2 lead.

Tyler Herron (5-4) did the rest, winning his fifth straight decision while fanning six and retiring eight of the nine batters that he faced. Herron combined with starter Brad Furnish to strike out 15 Timber Rattlers.

Earlier in the evening, the doubleheader started with a bang as the Swing dominated the Timber Rattlers in a game one blowout. All nine position players recorded hits and scored runs as Quad Cities pounded out 15 base hits in a 13-5 win.

Quad Cities sent nine men to the plate during a six-run top of the first inning. Buckman sparked the rally with two outs and the bases empty, belting his league-leading 13th homer of the year to right-center. Later in the frame Jared Schweitzer delivered a run-scoring single and Jaime Landin added an RBI double. Gorsett capped the rally with a three-run bomb to left field as the Swing jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead.

The score was 7-1 when the Swing exploded for another two-out, bases empty rally in the fourth. Five consecutive hits brought three more runs home, highlighted by a double by Christian Reyes as the lead ballooned to 10-1.

Willian Sandoval's first professional home run, a two-run shot in the fifth, made it a 12-1 advantage as Quad Cities sailed to the 13-5 victory.

A pair of All-Star selections pitched the Swing to the game one victory. Elvis Hernandez started and struck out five over four one-run innings, while P.J. Walters (5-1) snagged the win out of the bullpen despite allowing three runs over two frames. After a strike-three wild pitch to open the sixth, Walters went on to fan four in the inning.
