Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 5, 2007) - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (32-24) scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to break open a close game and went on the beat the Burlington Bees (25-33) 7-1 at Community Field tonight. The Kernels had four innings of four runs or more in the last three games to take four of six from the Bees in this series.
Bees' starter Ryan DiPietro (2-3) pulled off an unusual feat in the top of the first - he walked four batters without allowing a run. He walked the first three batters, but Mark Trumbo lined out and Abel Nieves was doubled off at second base. After another walk to Hank Conger, Matt Sweeney bounced out to end the inning.
The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Joe Dickerson led off with a double, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a groundout by Matt Morizio. The lead didn't last long as the Kernels answered right back in the third. DiPietro walked Ryan Mount to start the inning and after a strikeout, Chris Pettit fouled off several pitches before launching a two-run home run to left to give the Kernels a 3-2 lead. It was Pettit's second home run of the series and his eighth of the season. The Kernels then broke the game open in the fourth. Tyler Johnson reached on a throwing error by third baseman Kurt Mertins to leadoff the inning. P.J. Phillips followed with a double and Stantrel Smith singled to drive in the first run. Smith stole second setting up Mount for a base hit to drive in two and the Kernels lead was 5-1. Tyler Chambliss came on in relief of DiPietro and on his very first pitch, Mount stole second. Nieves moved him to third with a groundout and Pettit brought him in with a sacrifice fly for a 6-1 lead. Trumbo and Conger then smacked back-to-back doubles to produce one more run before Chambliss got out of the inning.
Kernels' starter Trevor Bell (1-2) was the beneficiary of the big lead and went on to work through six innings for his first Midwest League win. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six. Felipe Arrendondo worked two scoreless innings in relief and struck out three. Warner Madrigal allowed a hit and a walk to start the ninth, but struck out the next three batters to close it out.
Chambliss worked a total of four innings and allowed just the one run on two hits and struck out four. He has allowed one run in 9.1 innings over his last two appearances. Henry Barrera and Chris Hayes each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game on the mound for the Bees.
The Bees are off tomorrow and will start a four-game series at Beloit on Thursday at 7:00. LH Everett Teaford (1-5, 5.04) will start for the Bees against RH Jeff Manship (5-1, 1.49) for the Snappers. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
