
Kernels take first game of DH, 10-6

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels exploded for 10 runs and 14 hits as they took game one of a DH on Monday night, 10-6, from the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Burlington. Abel Nieves and Chris Pettit each had 3 RBI. Nieves was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and Pettit was 2 for 3 with a double.
Kernels starter Blake Holler allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out five over five innings pitched to get his first win of the season. Bobby Cassevah allowed four hits but no runs over two innings to preserve the win.
Six of the nine Kernel starters had multiple hits. Mark Trumbo and Hank Conger were both 2 for 4 with an RBI and P.J. Phillips was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and two stolen bases.
Burlington first baseman Brady Everett hit a three run home run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Kernels lead down to 10-6. The Kernels chased starter Josh Cribb (1-4) after 3-1/3 innings after he allowed seven runs and nine hits.
The win improves the Kernels record to 30-24 as Burlington falls to 25-31.
Game two will see newly arrived Kernels pitcher Vladimir Veras start against Jim Wladyka and will start around 8:45 pm.
