
Chiefs Send RHP Alburquerque to Mesa

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that RHP Al Alburquerque has been moved from Peoria to extended spring training at the Cubs facility in Mesa. RHP Donnie Walters will join the Chiefs from Mesa to fill the roster spot.
Alburquerque began the season as a member of the Chiefs starting rotation before suffering an injury and was placed on the disabled list after a start in Kane County on April 21. He was 1-2 in three starts with a 6.00 ERA before the injury. Since coming off the disabled list in late May, he was moved from the rotation to the bullpen where he was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in five appearances. In his last appearance on June 3 at home against Beloit, Alburquerque worked three innings and allowed two runs on one hit while striking out three.
Alburquerque was a non-drafted free agent signee by the Cubs in 2003 and spent the 2006 season in Mesa where he went 0-2 with a 5.68 ERA in eight appearances, five of which were starts. He missed the entire 2005 season due to an injury.
Right-Hander Donnie Walters, who will turn 21 on July 18th, was selected by the Cubs in the 30th round of the 2006 draft out of Richland Junior College in Dallas, Texas. He spent the 2006 season in Mesa where he made 14 appearances and posted a 1-0 record with a 5.26 ERA. He struck out 25 and walked 11 in 25 2/3 innings pitched. He is with the team and available to pitch in Tuesday night's 7:00 pm start against Beloit.
