Swing Sweep The Rattlers
June 5, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI -- The Swing of the Quad Cities defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 3-2 in game two of a double header on Tuesday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The win gave the Swing a sweep of the double header and of the four game series versus the Rattlers. Swing pitchers Brad Furnish and Tyler Herron combined to strikeout fifteen Wisconsin Timber Rattler batters. The frustration of the first half of the 2007 Timber Rattler campaign could be summed up in the way that the winning run scored for Quad Cities in the top of the sixth inning.
Quad Cities (34-24) got the lead on an RBI single by Brandon Buckman in the top of the third.
The Rattlers (17-40) took the lead thanks to a bout of wildness by Furnish. Juan Diaz was at third with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. Furnish struck out the next two batters to keep Diaz at third. Diaz scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. The wild pitch also happened to be ball four to Leury Bonilla. Bonilla went around to third on a wild pick off throw by Furnish. Another wild pitch allowed Bonilla to score the go ahead run. Furnish would finish the inning by recording his ninth strikeout of the game.
The Swing took the lead in the top of the sixth in an odd fashion. The Swing had runners on first and second with two outs. Tommy Pham sent a grounder to short, but Juan Diaz booted the ball for an error. As the ball trickled into left field, Luke Gorsett, the runner at second when the play started, raced for the plate. Rattler second baseman Ogui Diaz retrieved the ball and threw to the plate. Home plate umpire Alex Ortiz ruled Gorsett out at the plate for the final out...or was it?
The Rattler defense headed off the field, but the umpires talked the play over and -- after a brief discussion with Wisconsin manager Jim Horner -- eventually ruled Gorsett safe.
That was all the margin Herron needed. He allowed only a two out single in the bottom of the seventh as retired nine of ten batters he faced -- six via strikeout -- to record his fifth win of the season.
The Rattlers are off on Wednesday. They begin a series with the Kane County Cougars on Thursday on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Kyle Parker (2-2, 1.42) is the scheduled starter for Wisconsin. Andrew Bailey (0-3, 4.13) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 7:05pm.
