The Kannapolis Intimidators pounded out 17 hits on their way to a 9-6 win over the Lexington Legends Monday night in Kannapolis. The Legends, who had nine hits, received 10 walks from four Kannapolis pitchers, but left 13 men on base.
Lexington took a two-run lead in the top of the first. With one out, Jiovanni Mier singled and Adam Bailey walked. Both scored when Chris Wallace doubled to center field. Wallace leads the South Atlantic League with 30 runs batted in.
Kannapolis tied it in the bottom of the second. Mike Blanke led off with a double, and scored on a single by Dan Black. After Juan Silverio flied out, a wild pitch by Legends starter Carlos Quevedo allowed Black to go to third. Mt. Sterling native Drew Lee singled, scoring Black. Lee, who was 11-for-19 in an earlier series in Lexington, was two-for-four Monday night. The Intimidators took a 4-2 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Brady Shoemaker and Blanke, and they added four more in the fourth, a rally that included a leadoff triple by Lee and a two-run triple by Ross Wilson.
Kannapolis increased its lead to 9-2 with a run in the seventh inning on a triple by John Spatola and a ground out by Kyle Eveland before the Legends responded with four runs in the eighth on only two hits. The rally was helped by three walks and an error on third baseman Silverio with two outs that allowed two runs to score.
Kannapolis starter Ryan Buch (3-2) pitched the first five innings and picked up the win. He struck out eight batters and walked three. Quevedo (3-1) was the losing pitcher. Game two of the four-game series will be played Tuesday night in Kannapolis. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
