Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The series opener between the Lakewood blueClaws and Greensboro Grasshoppers was a nailbiter as it took 10 innings for Greensboro to emerge victorious 5-4 on Monday night. The BlueClaws came back from down 4-1 to tie up the game at 4-4 in the 8th inning, but were just unable to get over the hump as they lost on Noah Perio's walk-off RBI single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning. The loss marked the 5th time this season Lakewood has lost a game when they entered the game on a 2-game win streak. The loss also pushes the BlueClaws to 14-16, 2 games below .500 on the season.
Geancarlo Mendez was the main contributor on offense for Lakewood as he hit his first Home Run of the year with a solo shot in the first inning, and he also collected 2 more RBI's with an RBI double in the 7th inning. With the 2-5 performance Monday for Mendez, his average for the year now stands at .310 with 7 doubles and 14 RBI. Edgar Duran drove in the only other run of the game for Lakewood with a groudnout to shortstop that scored Pinch Runner Miguel Alvarez in the 8th inning. Jim Murphy was 2-4 with a double, a single, and walk in the game. In the top of the 10th, Domingo Santana led things off for the BlueClaws with a single, but the next 3 batters were retired in order to keep the game tied at 4 and set-up the walk-off win in the bottom half of the inning for Greensboro.
BlueClaws SP Garett Claypool is still looking for his first win of the year after he went just 4 innings, allowed 7 hts, 3 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 6. Reliever Lisalberto Bonilla picked up his first loss of the year, though he pitched fantastic. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, not allowing a baserunner from the 6th inning until the first batter in the 10th inning in Christina Yelich, who ended up scoring the game-wining run. Michael Brady picked up his 3rd win of the year for Greensboro. He stayed in the game to finish things out after blowing the save when he allowed Alvarez to score and tie it at 4 in the top of the 8th. Daniel Black hit his first HR of the year for Greensboro, Jobduan Morales had a 2 RBI single, and Marcell Ozuna and Noah Perio each chipped in with an RBI single.
Tuesday the BlueClaws will send out LHP Ervis Manzanillo (1-1, 5.01 ERA) to the mound, and Greensboro will counter with RHP Zach Neal (1-2, 4.03 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm, and it wil be game 2 of the 4 game series.
