
Gnats Walk Past Crawdads 6-1 Monday

SAVANNAH, GA -Starter Gonzlez Germen twirled a gem to help the Savannah Sand Gnats walk past the Hickory Crawdads 6-1 Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. Germen threw seven shutout innings tying a season-high for a Gnats' pitcher to earn his second win of 2011.
The Gnats (13-17) used seven walks total walks to score three times in both the second and third innings. In the second, Hickory starter Carlos Melowalked four batters to help the Gnats score three runs on just one hit. Savannah DH Blake Forsythe contributed the inning's only hit, grounding an RBI single through the left side to bring home the game's first run.
Three more walks from Hickory pitching helped the Gnats score three more runs in the third. Again, Forsythe drove home a run, this time with a lined single into center field. Then with the bases loaded, 2B Luis Nieveslined a single up the middle to plate two runs to give the Gnats a 6-0 lead. Forsythe finished 2-4 with two singles and two runs scored. Nieves was 2-3 with a walk and two RBI.
After inducing double plays in each of the first two innings, Savannah starter Gonzalez Germen settled in. He retired 10 batters in a row in the second through fifth innings and 16 of his final 18 batters through the end of the seventh inning. In their last 10 games, Savannah starters are now 5-1 with a 1.13 ERA (7 ER/55.2 IP) and have allowed just 42 hits and 15 walks while striking out 44 men.
The Crawdads (19-11) scored their only run in the top of the ninth against reliever Hamilton Bennett, who made his first Sand Gnats appearance.
The Gnats will look for their second win in a row with RHP Greg Peavey(1-1, 3.6) taking on Hickory RHP Roman Mendez (4-0, 1.72) Tuesday in game two of this four-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and gates open at 6 pm. The pre-game show on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com begins at 6:50 pm.
