Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo started the month of February by concluding a three-game homestand Friday (2/2) against the Rockford IceHogs. After a scoreless feverish tempo in the first 20 minutes of play, Rockford found the back of the net just 18 seconds into the second period with a goal from Luke Fritshaw (4). The IceHogs extended their lead to 2-0 four minutes later, when Bryce Cockburn (5) capitalized on the power-play. Kalamazoo cut the Rockford lead to a single digit with a man-advantage tally from Kory Karlander (25). Kevin Ulanski's (15) wrist shot from the high slot midway through the second regained a two-goal advantage for the IceHogs. Continuing their power-play magic, Lucas Drake (11) jammed the puck past goaltender Frederic Cloutier to move the K-Wings back to within a single goal. Putting Kalamazoo deeper in a hole, Preston Mizzi (18) found his own rebound and beat netminder Ryan Nie to move the IceHogs ahead 4-2. Less than a minute after Mizzi's tally, Kalamazoo answered back with a goal from Glenn Detulleo (9). Building on their momentum, Kalamazoo pulled even with Rockford 11:22 left in regulation when Karlander netted his 2nd of the night and team leading 26th of the season. Both teams would be held scoreless the remainder of the third, forcing a shootout. Rockford outscored Kalamazoo 3-0 in the extra session to win the contest 5-4, capturing their first shootout victory of the season while dropping the K-Wings extra session record to 4-4.

Winless in their last two contests, Kalamazoo went to Fort Wayne, Indiana looking for a little redemption on Saturday (2/3) against the Komets. With neither team able to score in the opening period, special teams would play a major role in the second. Martin Gascon (15) found open ice at the right circle and sent a rocket past Tom Askey to give the Komets a 1-0 lead. Komets top offensive weapon, J.C. Ruid (28) created a turnover in the neutral zone and cashed it in to a shorthanded tally. January's rookie of the month, Matt Syroczynski (12) knocked in a power-play rebound to propel Fort Wayne ahead 3-0. The Komets extended their lead to 4-0, when Mario Larocque (15) jammed in a rebound past Askey. Avoiding the shutout, captain Nick Bootland powered a shorthanded blast over Kevin St. Pierre, to tie Bootland with Karlander for the team lead in both goals scored (26) and shorthanded tallies (4), but it wouldn't be enough, as Fort Wayne defeated Kalamazoo by the final of 4-1.

Fast Forward

Kalamazoo will lace up their skates for four games this week starting Wednesday (2/7), against the Chicago Hounds. Chicago commences the week in fourth place in the Western Conference. Kalamazoo is 3-0-0 against the franchise celebrating their inaugural year, outscoring the Hounds 17-3.

February 9th, the archrivals will battle in Fort Wayne, while on Sunday (2/11) the teams will return to Kalamazoo for a 4 p.m. face-off on Scout Night presented by Meijer. Putting up the Shots

When the K-Wings outshoot their opponents, they usually win. On the season, Kalamazoo is 19-7-1 when they put up more shots than their opposition.

Snapping a Streak

Kalamazoo will try to put a stop to their current three-game winless streak this Wednesday on the road against the Chicago Hounds. The three-game streak ties a K-Wings' season high for consecutive losses.

Closing in on 500

Forward Kory Karlander is quickly closing in a personal milestone. Karlander needs just four more points to reach 500 for his career.

Chasing a Record

With a shorthanded goal last Saturday against Fort Wayne, captain Nick Bootland is chasing another K-Wings' UHL franchise record. The shorthanded goal places Bootland just one behind Jim Brown (2001-2003) who holds the K-Wings' record for most shorthanded goals in a career with eight.

The Obscure Stat of the Week

Kalamazoo will continue the second leg of a three-game road trip this Wednesday in Chicago. The K-Wings are 14-8-1 in games played away from Wings Stadium. The 14 victories ties Kalamazoo with Fort Wayne for second place in league for road victories.
