Port Huron Flags News Release

Game Recaps

Wednesday, Jan. 32 Port Huron 1 @ Elmira 3

Elmira scored first, but newly signed Bobby McKillop tied the game in the second period. A late goal in the third period put the Jackals on top again and an empty-netter sealed the deal for the home team.

Friday, Feb. 2 Port Huron 3 @ Muskegon 2

Port Huron took a 2-0 lead on goals from Bobby Kukulka and Greg Bullock, before the first-place Fury knotted the score in the third period. Kukulka's second goal of the night gave the Flags the edge and Noah Ruden turned away the rest of the Fury's shots, earning the Flags their first win in LC Walker Arena this season.

Saturday, Feb. 3 Port Huron 1 @ Quad City 5

Despite Mark Cadotte's first period tally, the Mallards responded with 5 unanswered goals on Brad Smith for a solid victory over the visiting Flags. Cadotte also received 2 fighting majors for tussles with Mallards players Travis Granbois and Brent Currie.

Team Notes

- Bobby McKillop signed with the Flags on Wednesday and scored the only goal of the night against Elmira. McKillop played with the Border Cats in the '90s and early 2000s. and returned to help the team's offense

- After losing eight straight in January, a 3-2 victory in Muskegon ended the drought and gave the Flags their first road win over the Fury

- Despite sitting out the past month with a leg injury, goalie Dustin Traylen's SPCT of .914 is tied with Kalamazoo's Tom Askey and Rockford's Frederic Cloutier for third in the league.

- The Flags are 2-1-0 against Rockford, 2-2-0 against Bloomington, and are under .500 against all other teams in the league

- Third period defensive stances have become a strength of the Flags, as they are 7-2-1 (6-1-1 at home, 1-1-0 on the road) when they have the lead after the second period.

Upcoming Games:

Wednesday, Feb. 7 @ Fort Wayne Komets

Friday, Feb. 9 vs. Muskegon Fury (home)

Saturday, Feb. 10 @ Kalamazoo Wings

Sunday, Feb. 11 vs. Chicago Hounds (home)

The Flags head into a very tough stretch, trading home and away games until the end of the week. Fort Wayne is a fierce competitor at home and the visiting Fury will no doubt be seeking revenge for their loss on Saturday. Port Huron will have to bring its A-game to Kalamazoo, as Wings Stadium has allowed the Flags just one win in almost two years. On Sunday they face a very important match-up against the ninth place Chicago Hounds, who are just 5 points back from the Flags in the playoff race. It will be the first home stand against the Hounds, as their last contest in Chicago ended unfavorably for the Flags in a 5-2 loss.
