Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Toledo, OH - Joel Martin (13-13-2-1) turned aside a game-high 31 shots, not including all five he would face in the shootout, as the Kalamazoo Wings (15-16-2-1) defeated the Toledo Walleye (19-13-0-4) 2-1 in a shootout Sunday evening at the Huntington Center.
Crisp passing on an odd-man rush gave the Walleye the lead late in the first period, as Willie Coetzee found Max Nicastro (2nd) for the go-ahead tally with 2:45 remaining in the period. Both of Nicastro's goals this season have occurred against the K-Wings.
Streaking up the ice late in the period, Aaron Clarke flipped a pass to Alexandre Mallet (5th), who in a single motion fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Jordan Pearce (10-5-0-1) with 25.6 seconds remaining in the stanza to tie the game at 1-1.
A second-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks in 2012, Mallet, who has played in 14 games for the K-Wings, has earned five goals in his last six contests.
Neither team could figure out how to beat either goaltender in the remainder of the game, which forced a shootout.
In the extra session, Kalamazoo's Eric Kattelus notched the lone goal of shooting lifting a wrister over the glove hand of Pearce.
This season, the K-Wings have stopped 24 of the 26 (0.923) shootout attempts they have faced, the best-percentage in the entire ECHL.
The victory marks the first-time this season that Kalamazoo has won back-to-back games on the road.
