Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - January 6, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals closed out a four game week by claiming a 4-3 win over the Trenton Titans on Sunday at First Arena. The win moved Elmira's record to 17-15-3 on the season.

With the Jackals playing their third game in as many days it took them a little time to work off the fatigue from the first two. Trenton brought big pressure early in the first and resulted in the Titans earning four of the first five power plays of the game. They turned two of those chances into goals, first by Jacob Cepis at 6:24 then by Andy Bombach at 11:19, to open up a 2-0 lead. Jackals goalie Marc Cheverie saw a ton of rubber in that span as the Titans launched 13 shots his way in the first 12 minutes, and 19 total for the first. But Cheverie held Trenton at bay the rest of the first and his teammates picked him up with a late goal. Artem Demkov, after having his first shot blocked, reloaded and rifled a wrist shot past Trenton's Scott Wedgewood to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

Elmira earned a power play at the tail end of the first and had the majority of it carry over to the second. It didn't take long for the Jackals to capitalize as with 28 seconds gone by Danny New lifted a backhander across the line from the side of the net. It was the rookie defenseman's second goal of the year. The teams took turns trading scoring opportunities over the next few minutes, but Trenton's Shane Harper dented the net next to restore the Titans' lead at 14:32. Unfazed, the Jackals responded with Andrew Rowe taking a pass from Demkov off of a Trenton turnover and sending in his 16th of the season which tied the score with 1:24 left in the stanza. Cheverie's workload was significantly lighter in the second with Elmira limiting Trenton to just five shots.

Elmira worked quickly in the third to break the tie as Demkov potted his second goal of the game, fourth point overall, just 38 seconds in. Working low on the right wing he took a pass from the corner from Dustin Gazley and whipped a one-timer past Wedgewood to put Elmira in the driver's seat for the first time in the game. The helper was Gazley's third of the game, and Rowe also assisted to earn his third point of the night. Trenton hit the accelerator in an attempt to tie it but, despite 13 shots, the Titans could not find a way to beat Cheverie to tie the score.

Cheverie finished the night with 34 saves in earning his ninth win of the season. The Jackals ended the night 1-for-6 on the power play and 6-for-8 on the penalty kill.
