Trenton Denied Twice in Final Minutes; Falls 4-3 at Elmira

January 6, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

Elmira, NY - The beginning started out great for the Titans, proud affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead at Elmira.

The end result was different, unfortunately, as a waived off goal and a final desperation shot caught the post, only adding to the frustration of a 4-3 lost the Atlantic Division rival Jackals before 3,000 fans at First Arena tonight.

The loss drops the Titans under .500 (14-15-3-2-33 points) for the first time in several games and drops their record when scoring first to 11-3-1-2. They begin their 2013 calendar year 0-2-1 in the first three games.

Trenton jumped on the Jackals with a pair of power play goals in the first. Jacob Cepis put home his 10th of the year six minutes in, then Andy Bohmbach picked up his team-leading 15th five minutes later to make it 2-0.

Titan nemesis Artem Demkov countered late in the period to cut the deficit in half. Then on a man-advantage carried over into the second, Danny New's second of the season tied the game at 2-2.

Shane Harper knocked home a Kory Nagy rebound - his third point of the game - for his second goal since joining the Titans three games ago. The even strength marker made it 3-2 Trenton with 5:28 left in the period.

Still, the Jackals (17-15-1-237 points) would not back off, as Andrew Rowe ripped a shot past Scott Wedgewood (L, 10-10-2, 29 saves) to help close the period tied 3-3.

Like the second, a first-minute goal proved the Titans undoing, as Demkov finished a 2-on-1 with Dustin Gazely just 38 seconds into the third, giving the Jackals their first lead of the game, 4-3.

The score held with under three to play, when Justin Taylor tied the game with a one-timer in the left circle past Marc Cheverie (W, 9-9-0-1, 34 saves). Or so the Titans thought, as Trenton got whistled for an interference call just before the goal. No one realized the call was made, as each side reacted in its own way. But when it was known that the goal was disallowed, reactions quickly reversed.

Still, the Titans had a shot to tie the game again, drawing a Jackals' penalty just before theirs expired. With a power play and Wedgewood pulled in the final 40 seconds, they ratcheted up the pressure. It nearly paid off in the final three seconds, when a Titans' stick caught hold of the puck in the slot and ripped a shot through a huge crowd in front of Cheverie. The puck clipped the outside of the left post and bounced away just before the final horn sounded.

The Titans now head back home for the first time in 2013, to face the South Carolina Stingrays in a two-game set this weekend, Friday January 11 and Saturday January 12 (both at 7:05). Tickets are available for both games by calling (609) 341-1100, or online at TrentonTitansHockey.com.
