Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice three times last week. Kalamazoo started the week on Thursday (1/16), as they traveled to Glens Falls, New York to battle the Adirondack IceHawks. Kalamazoo dominated the games first twelve minutes of play, which included Jim Brown's 13th goal of the season at the 11:17 mark. However, from the there the night would belong to the IceHawks, as Adirondack scoref the game's next 5 goals to make the score 5-1 in favor of Adirondack. Kalamazoo grabbed their second goal of the game late in the second period, when Justin Cardwell scored on the power play to make the score 5-2 IceHawks. Adirondack would light the lamp two more times, as the IceHawks went on to defeat the K-Wings 7-2.
Kalamazoo found itself in a goaltending duel as they traveled to Port Huron to battle the Beacons. K-Wings netminder Chad Alban stood on his head stopping all 33 shots that came his way to record his first shutout of the season in a one-nothing shootout victory over Port Huron. Beacons goaltender Kory Cooper was equally stellar as he received his second shutout of the year stopping 35 shots. In the shootout, the K-Wings would outlast Beacons outscoring the Beacons 3-2 through the 7-man shootout. The victory was the second straight shootout victory for Kalamazoo, who are now 4-7 in shootouts.
The K-Wings finished the week on Saturday (1/18) as they hosted the Missouri River Otters. The River Otters used a three goal first period, to propel them to a 8-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings. The K-Wings got their lone goal of the game in second period, when Justin Cardwell (11) knocked in a Jim Brown rebound, to make the score 6-1 Missouri. The top team in the UHL added two more goals, including Dustin Whitecotton's (19) second of the game. Chris Taylor earned his 3rd victory of the season for Missouri, as he stopped 32 shots to record the victory. Chad Alban received the loss and dropped his record to 10-9-4
Fast Forward Kalamazoo will have a light week as far as games are concerned, as the K-Wings will play only two games this week. The K-Wings will play their second of five consecutive home games as they host the Missouri River Otters on Friday, January 24th. For Kalamazoo, the game will be the second straight against Missouri, and their 6 in just over a month against the top team in the UHL. Kalamazoo will be looking to avenge their 8-1 loss to Missouri last Saturday. Despite the loss last week the K-Wings still lead the season series over the River Otters with a record of 3-2-3. Lifetime the K-Wings are 18-9-2 against Missouri.
Kalamazoo will finish the week on Saturday (1/25) as they host the defending Colonial Cup Champions, the Muskegon Fury. The meeting will be the first between the teams since the K-Wings lost 2-1 in a shootout at the Walker Arena back on November 30th. Kalamazoo is 1-3-2 against the Fury this season, and 8-20-3 all-time. The Fury enter the week tied for second place in the Western Conference with the Quad City Mallards. Kalamazoo trail the Fury and the Mallards by just 7 points for second place in the Western Conference.
Winterfest Comes to Kalamazoo Wings Stadium, Kalamazoo Wings, and the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce will be holding Winterfest 2003 this week. The festival, which will be held at Wings Stadium, will have numerous events including two K-Wings home games.
In the Cards K-Wings forward Justin Cardwell has been on a scoring tear, as he has scored in 3 of his last five games. In his past five games, Cardwell has scored 3 goals and 1 assist.
Shutting the Door Chad Alban's shutout last Friday (1/17) at Port Huron was his first of the season, and the second for Kalamazoo his year. The shutout was also the 7th shutout in the K-Wings UHL history.
Mini-Hockey Stick Night When the K-Wings play the Muskegon Fury on Saturday (1/25), they will do so on K-Wings Mini-Hockey Stick Night. The first 1,000 fans at Wings Stadium will receive a free K-Wings Mini-Hockey Stick.
Meijer Autograph Night The K-Wings will have two games at home this week, which means fans will have two opportunities to go to the Meijer Autograph Table. Following the K-Wings game on Friday night, fans can get autographs from Dan Hodge and Shawn Roed. On Saturday Night, K-Wings Rob Vessio and Stu Dunn will be signing autographs after the game. The Meijer Autograph table is located behind section 12 at Wings Stadium.
Lightbody on the Radio Join special guest Quade Lightbody, as he joins General Manager/Head Coach Paul Pickard and the "Voice of the K-Wings" Mike Modugno on The Sports Station 1600 AM WQSN. The show runs from 6:30-7PM at Gallagher's Eatery on Stadium Drive.
The Obscure Stat of the Week Coming into this season, the K-Wings were automatic on Thursday's, as the team posted a record of 7-1-0. This season the K-Wings have had their problems on the Thursday's as the K-Wings are 0-3-0.
