San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls are back it, piling up more W's. After another perfect week, the Blue and Orange have strung together a four-game winning streak and have now won 16 of 18 overall.

San Diego (24-12-1) began the week with a 3-1 win in Long Beach. Then Anchorage came to town and the Gulls exploded, outscoring the struggling Aces 16-5. The Gulls remain in second place with 49 points, 10 behind the Idaho Steelheads.

R.J. Enga (3g, 5a), Sylvain Deschatelets (2g, 8a) and Cory Cyrenne (3g, 5a) combined for 26 points over the weekend. Enga is now sixth in the West Coast Hockey League with 41 points and fourth with 19 goals.

Trevor Koenig, San Diego's workhorse in net, got some much needed time off last week, thanks to Cris Classen's sold goaltending. Classen played in all three games, stopping 74 of 80 shots. Koenig still needs three more wins for 100 in his WCHL career.

O'Ree received a standing ovation from the 10,050 fans in the building when he skated a ceremonial lap around the Sports Arena ice.

RECAP:

GULLS 3 @ Long Beach 1; Wednesday, Jan. 15: Mark Pederson's goal with 2:27 left propelled the Gulls over the struggling Ice Dogs. San Diego carried a 1-0 lead into the third period before Tyler Willis tied it. The game seemed as if it was heading to a shootout, but not if Pederson had anything to do with it. Deschatelets sealed the win with an empty-netter.

Anchorage 3 @, GULLS 8; Friday, Jan.17: Cyrenne bagged a hat trick, Deschatelets notched one goal and five assists and Enga contributed with four helpers to lead the Gulls to the easy five-goal whitewashing. San Diego erupted with four goals in a 3:25 span to set the tone. Anchorage tried to fight back and made it a 6-3 game in the second period, but the Gulls kept pouring it on.

Anchorage 2 @ GULLS 8; Saturday, Jan. 18: Enga, Cyrenne and Deschatelets each had four points and again led the charge to San Diego's bashing of the Aces. The Blue and Orange jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, scored four more in the second and one more - on Enga's hat trick - in the third.

THIS WEEK:

San Diego now embarks on a six-game, three-city road trip, which begins this weekend in Bakersfield. The Gulls and Condors square off Friday and Saturday nights, both starting at 7 p.m. From there, San Diego goes to Idaho and Fresno before returning home Feb. 7.
