January 20, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Winger Paul Williams enters Wednesday's game against Fresno just one point shy of becoming only the fourth player in West Coast Hockey League history to reach the 500-point plateau.
Two of the other three players to crack 500 points are also familiar names to Aces' fans. The all-time leading scorer in the history of the WCHL, Dean Larson, currently leads the league in scoring with 51 points (20g-31a) and has 751 for his career. Keith Street retired in 2001 but still ranks third on the career scoring list with 507 points, a total that Williams should surpass in the next couple of weeks. Former Colorado and Fresno standout Craig Lyons is the only other WCHL player to reach 500. Currently playing in Europe, Lyons sits at 587, second behind only Larson in league history.
The 32-year-old Williams, whose 232 career WCHL goals trail only Larson's 251, begins his quest Wednesday night at Sullivan Arena against the Fresno Falcons (19-13-5) at 7:00 p.m. If Williams comes up empty Wednesday, he will have two more chances on Friday and Saturday night against Fresno (both games 7:00 p.m.) before the Aces head back out on the road for games at Bakersfield January 31 and February 1. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
The team will be holding Military Appreciation Night Friday, January 24, during the 7:00 p.m. game against Fresno. 100 camouflage Aces' jerseys will be given away that night as all branches of the military will be represented at the game and the U.S. Air Force Band of the Pacific/Alaska Brass will be on hand to perform the pre-game ceremony. This Wednesday, the Aces will hold a dress rehearsal at 1:00 p.m. for the military pre-game show, which will feature a Coast Guard boat, color guards, Humvees, etc. All groups will be recognized over the public address system and special group prices will be available for those military personnel wishing to attend ($7 for balcony seating, $14 for lower mezzanine). Tickets for military also will be available on the base at the ITT office. Scout Night has been scheduled for Saturday versus Fresno. The first 1,000 children age 14 and under will receive a rally towel courtesy of The Alaska Club and all scouts are eligible for special group rates.
On the ice, the Anchorage Aces lost three more games last week to extend their losing streak to seven (tying a club record for the second time this season) and winless skid to eight. Anchorage's overall record stands at 10-28-2, and the team is just 1-11-1 over its last 13 games. Kimbi Daniels scored both goals for the Aces in a 4-2 loss at Fresno last Tuesday. The Aces fell behind 4-0 in each game over the weekend in San Diego, deficits that resulted in 8-3 and 8-2 setbacks. Despite a relatively quiet week, Yvan Corbin remains second only to Larson in the WCHL scoring race with 46 points. He also is second in the league with 21 goals and fifth with 25 assists. Don Martin ranks second among WCHL defensemen with 23 points (7g-16a).
The Aces once again will enjoy a busy week in the community. Anchorage event coordinator Jessica Delich will be the moderator at Tudor Elementary's Spelling Bee Tuesday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. and will be speaking at Gruening Middle School's Career Day on Wednesday, January 22 between 9:15-10:45 a.m. Six players, including Larson, Daniels, and Williams, will be appearing at Firelake Elementary School Thursday, January 23 at 1:30 p.m. as part of the Skate-into-Reading program. Looking ahead, the organization will be holding its annual Dimond Center "Skate with the Aces" Sunday, February 23 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. For more information regarding tickets, appearances, or upcoming games, please call (907) 258-ACES.
