Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release
Kingfish center man Bryan Richardson tallied his 100th goal as a Kingfish in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pensacola Ice Pilots. Kingfish coach Cam Brown and Richardson are the only two players to tally 100 goals in a Kingfish career.
For the Record: Richardson is closing in on the Kingfish record for most goals scored in a Baton Rouge uniform. Kingfish coach Cam Brown holds the current record for most goals as a Kingfish with 103 goals. Richardson is 3 goals shy of that mark and is on a pace to score 33 goals this season. If Richardson keeps to that pace, he would set a new Kingfish single season mark for goals eclipsing a record he shares with Jon Sturgis (99/00) and Luke Curtin (99/00) with 32 goals in a season.
20 or more: For the fourth straight season in the ECHL, Bryan Richardson has tallied at least 20 or more goals in a season as he picked up his 20th marker of the season in Sunday's 4-3 loss against Pensacola. He tallied 32 in the 1998-99 season, 29 in the 1999-00 season while tallying a total of 23 goals last season with the Kingfish and the Mobile Mysticks. He picked up 17 goals in 45 games during the 2000-01 season with the London Knights of the British International Super League.
Gifts: The Kingfish surrendered three shorthanded goals this weekend, one in each contest they played. The Kingfish entered the weekend having surrendered just 4 shorthanded goals and in a tie for third place for fewest allowed this season. To add insult to injury, the Kingfish went 0-fer on the power play over the weekend.
All Star Game: The 2003 ECHL Compuware All Star game is this Tuesday in Estero, Florida at the TECO Arena, the home of the Florida Everblades. Joe Guenther will represent the Kingfish in the All-Star game.
Scoreless: The Kingfish were shutout for the second time this season by Jackson's Tyrone Garner in Saturday's 3-0 loss to the Bandits. Garner recorded his first shutout against the Kingfish on November 3rd as he blanked the Kingfish 2-0. Louisiana's Kyle Kettles is the only other netminder to record a shutout this season against the Kingfish. Ironically, the Kingfish have not been shutout on the road this season.
Norrie the Goal scorer: Jason Norrie, known around the league as an enforcer, tallied his 15th goal of the season in Friday's 3-2 loss at Mississippi. He has surpassed his ECHL season high for goals in a season of 9 a couple of games ago and is 5 goals shy of tying his professional career high of 20 goals set during the 1999-00 season with the B.C. Icemen of the United Hockey League. Despite his offensive numbers, Norrie has still tallied 125 penalty minutes this season with the Kingfish in his traditional role.
It couldn't be any closer: The Kingfish have lost a whole boatload of games this season by just one goal including yesterday's 4-3 loss to the Ice Pilots. Through 44 games this season, 28 have been decided by one goal while the Kingfish have gone 8-12-8 in those contests.
And the final score is 4-3... : ...for the fifth time this season in a game between the Kingfish and the Ice Pilots. Even more interesting is the fact that it has been the last five game straight that have ended by that score, with the Kingfish winning three of those five games including one in overtime. Eight of nine against the Ice Pilots this season have been decided by one goal.
Last Week's Games: 0-3-0, 0 pts.
January 17th, Mississippi 3, Kingfish 2
The Kingfish could not overcome a 3-1 deficit in the third period in the 3-2 loss at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Mississippi opened the scoring with a goal by Dave Paradise at the 8:00 minute mark of the first period. Trevor Demmans tied the game up at one just 30 seconds into the second period as he capitalized on a Mississippi turnover deep in the Sea Wolves' zone. Austin Miller tallied a shorthanded goal at the 13:59 mark of the second period to give the Sea Wolves the lead. Mississippi extended the lead to two before the end of the middle period as Cody Bowtell beat Niklas Sundberg with 2:31 remaining in the stanza. Jason Norrie tallied the only goal in the third period at the 8:40 mark of the third but the Kingfish could get no closer.
January 18th, Jackson 3, Kingfish 0
Tyrone Garner recorded his second shutout against the Kingfish this season stopping all 29 Kingfish shots. Brent Gauvreau broke a scoreless tie at the 8:59 mark of the second period to give the Bandits all they would need in the win. John McNabb added the insurance in the third period as he tallied two goals in the final stanza. His first of the game came at the 6:29 mark of the third period on the penalty kill. McNabb tallied his second of the game at the 14:36 mark of the period to put the game away. The Kingfish were the shutout for the third time this season.
January 19th, Pensacola 4, Kingfish 3
The Kingfish and the Ice Pilots exchanged goals but Pensacola came out on top. Trevor Allman opened the scoring midway through the second period to give Pensacola the 1-0 lead. Bryan Richardson's 100th goal as a Kingfish tied the game up at one at the 18:06 mark of the second period. Mike Oliveira gave the Kingfish a 2-1 lead two minutes into the third period. Pensacola responded four minutes later as Allman added his second of the contest. Oliveira regained the lead for the Kingfish with his second of the game at the 11:17 mark of the third period. A minute and a half later, Allman completed the hat-trick and tied the game up at three. Martin Bartek's goal at the 16:36 mark of the third period proved to be the game winner. Jeff Blair made 29 saves in the losing effort for the Kingfish.
