K-Wings Pour in Season High 8 Goals in Win on Boy Scout Night
February 12, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Trent Daavettila had a hat trick while Darryl Lloyd and Kory Karlander both added two goals on the evening, as the Kalamazoo Wings routed the Greenville Road Warriors at Wings Stadium 8-5 during Boy Scout Night.
The K- Wings were not reluctant in the first period of their showdown with the Road Warriors, as they found the back of the net three times.
Getting the third largest home crowd (4,726) of season involved early, Daavettila found a loose puck in the crease that was sitting behind Greenville goaltender Nicola Riopel 3:08 into the period. Daavettila was the only one able to get his stick on the puck, sliding it across the goal line to open up the scoring for Kalamazoo and notch his 16th of the season. The goal was his team leading fifth "first goal" on the season.
Daavettila couldn't be denied in the first, as he got himself another tally eight and a half minutes after his first one. The goal was the 17th of the campaign for Daavettila. Andrew Fournier was credited for the lone assist on the goal.
The K-Wings weren't done after two goals in the first, Justin Taylor (20th) got into the action, when his quick wrist shot beat Riopel over his extended leg-pad. Taylor joined Kory Karlander and Fournier in the 20-goal club for the season.
Kalamazoo would establish an even bigger lead in the second period, when Darryl Lloyd got himself into the scoring mix with his laser from the right circle. The shot went across his body and cleared the shoulder of the Greenville goalkeeper. The goal was Lloyd's seventh of the season.
Using a power play opportunity, the K-Wings capitalized yet again. This time it was Kory Karlander (21st) who buried a one-time slap shot from the top of the right circle to put his team up five goals. The goal was his 10th power play goal of the season, a team lead.
Greenville could not be silenced forever, as they caught a favorable bounce off the backboards that went right to the stick of Shane Harper (10th) who put it past Kalamazoo goalie Ryan Nie.
The K-Wings went just over four minutes before they re-established a five-goal lead on the Road Warriors using the hat trick goal from Daavettila. The goal gave him 18 on the season and his first hat trick as a professional.
Just under three minutes later, the quick-striking Road Warriors came back with another goal of their own. Conner Shields was the lucky recipient of a Brandon Wong pass which helped Shields net his 15th goal on the season.
The third period was as full of scoring as the two before, starting three and a half minutes in with The Road Warriors striking first. Jimmy Kilpartick got his 10th goal of the season and brought Greenville within three goals.
Kalamazoo opened the game back up rather rapidly using Lloyd's second goal of the evening and his eighth of the season at the 7:11 mark.
But even with seven goals already on the evening, the K-Wings weren't done. Karlander also got his second goal of the night and his 22nd on the campaign. The eighth goal of the night set a team season-high for goals in a single game.
With just over a minute to go, Greenville found the back of the net again, as Chris Clackson (6th) let loose a blast that beat Nie cleanly over his shoulder.
Just 17 seconds passed before the Road Warriors were back on the board again. Blake Parlett tipped a Shields slap shot into the net which brought his team within three.
No other goals were scored, as the three goal lead was enough for Kalamazoo to hold on for their second straight victory.
Kalamazoo will hit the road tomorrow, Sunday, February 13th for a 4 p.m. encounter at the Huntington Center to battle the Toledo Walleye.
The K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium for a 7 p.m. face-off this Monday, February 14th during the 11th Annual Pink Ice Game, presented by WWMT and WKFR versus the Wheeling Nailers.
