Elmira Jackals News Release

Ontario, Calif. -The Elmira Jackals (20-20-5-1) skated to their first shootout of the 2010-2011 season on Friday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena but fell to the Ontario Reign (16-18-2-2), 5-4. The Jackals earned a point in their first overtime game since Dec. 4 and first shootout appearance since Mar. 17 of last season.

Former Jackal Chaz Johnson, playing in his first game against Elmira, netted a pair of goals including one at 2:14 of the first period to put the Reign up 1-0.

At 9:29 of the first, Michael Dubuc tied the game, 1-1, by sliding in a rebound on a backhand from a Justin Donati shot on the power play.

Shawn Collymore cut in front of the net at 13:22 of the first on an Ontario power play and scored to put the Reign back on top, 2-1.

With 38.1 seconds to go in the opening period, Patrick Coulombe took a feed from Brock McBride and wristed a puck past the stick side of Reign goaltender Beau Erickson from the high slot to make it 2-2 after two periods.

Jackals goaltender Garrett Zemlak helped keep the game tied by stopping a penalty shot by Aaron Lewadniuk with his right pad at 6:40 of the second period.

In the third period, Andrew Sweetland's backhand from the low, right circle soared into the net as Elmira broke through for its first lead of the game, 3-2, at 5:22.

Johnson's second goal of the game tied the contest, 3-3, at 12:07.

Sweetland secured his second strike of the third period with a wrist shot from the left circle at 14:21 to put the Jackals back in front, 4-3.

Collymore's second at 16:10 of the third on a pass from Alex Bourret in the slot sent the game to overtime, 4-4.

Elmira outshot Ontario 3-1 in the extra session but Erickson held his ground to keep the Jackals off the board. Zemlak made a spectacular glove save on Kyle Kraemer on the doorstep to help get the Jackals to the shootout.

In the shootout, Sweetland wristed a puck low past the stick side of Erickson to give the Jackals the advantage in the second round. Tallies by Jordan Morrison in the third round and Justin Taylor in the final round, however, gave Ontario the 5-4 win and two points.

Zemlak fell to 1-2-0-1 with the Jackals with 20 saves while Erickson was credited with 29 saves and upped his record to 5-8-1-1.

The Jackals became the final ECHL team to participate in a shootout in 2010-2011. Elmira's last shootout appearance was on Mar. 17, 2010 in a 2-1 loss to the Charlotte Checkers. One night later in his professional debut, Zemlak earned a shootout victory for the Checkers against the Reading Royals.

Elmira and Ontario meet for the second of three times at 10:00 p.m. (ET) on Saturday.
