Hedden's Hat Trick paces Walleye over Wheeling

JOHNSTOWN, PA - Mike Hedden's hat trick helped lead the Toledo Walleye to a 4-1 victory over a shorthanded Wheeling Nailers team at the Cambria County War Memorial Saturday night.

Mike Hedden led the charge for the Walleye in the first period. Hedden scored the first of his two first period goals on the power player. Evan Rankin brought the puck to the left side of the net, and fed a cross crease pass to Hedden who buried the puck on the backside to give Toledo the 1-0 lead. Hedden was the recipient of a perfect bounce pass off the dashers to set up his second goal. Jason Lepine slapped the puck off the neutral zone boards which bounced perfectly to Hedden, springing him into the zone on a breakaway. Hedden fired a wrist shot past Nailers netminder Peter Delmas o give Toledo a 2-0 lead at the end of one.

The Nailers got on the scoreboard in the second on the power play, taking advantage of a 5-on-3 advantage. Doug Rogers broke toward the net, and feathered a pass to the backside post to Mikael Bedard who slipped the puck past Toledo goaltender Jimmy Spratt, pulling Wheeling within one. However, the night belonged to Mike Hedden, who picked up a bouncing puck at the top of the crease and flipped a high shot past Delmas to complete the hat-trick and lift the Walleye to a 3-1 lead at the end of two.

In the third the Nailers continue to threaten the net of Spratt, but the Toledo goaltender came up with some big saves to keep the game at 3-1. Simone Danis-Pepin added an insurance goal at 14:58 of the third to seal thw 4-1 victory. Nailers goaltender Peter Delmas suffered his first loss, of the season, and falls to 8-1 on the season.
