Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Toledo Mud Hens fell to the Indianapolis Indians 9-1 in Saturday afternoon's game at Fifth Third Field. Toledo falls to 18-13 with their fourth straight loss, and Indianapolis advances to 14-17.
Brenan Hanifee started the game for the Mud Hens. After pitching exactly 4.0 innings in each of his first six starts this year, he pitched a season high 5.0 innings today, though was credited with the loss. Hanifee exited the game with a final stat line of 5.0 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. Indians starter Osvaldo Bido pitched 5.0 innings, giving up just one run and earning the win. Bido's stat line: 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
Indianapolis opened the scoring in today's contest with a two run double off the bat of Cal Mitchell in the top of the second inning. Indians first baseman Ryan Vilade hit a two-run home run in the following inning, a deep drive to left field to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Mitchell and Vilade both recorded additional RBIs later in the game, Mitchell with a solo home run in the sixth, and Vilade with an RBI single in the seventh. Malcom Nunez knocked in Vilade later in that same inning with a three-RBI double that gave Indianapolis a 9-1 lead.
Toledo's offense was relatively quiet this afternoon, aside from their number nine hitter. Shortstop Corey Joyce went 2-3 with a solo home run and a double. It was his first double and first home run since being called up to Toledo from Erie on April 28th. Joyce started the season slow with Erie, slashing just .063/.250/.156 in 11 games with the AA team. Getting the call up to Toledo seems to have given him the perfect change of scenery, as he has slashed .333/.438/.833 in his first five games with the Hens this season. Joyce was similarly good with Toledo last September when he played seven games for the Hens, going 10-16 with two doubles and two home runs.
Toledo and Indianapolis will wrap up this series tomorrow at 2:05 at Fifth Third Field. After that, they head to Iowa for six game series against the Cubs starting Tuesday.
