Buffalo Bisons News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Worcester Red Sox swept the doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons 7-4 in game one, and 12-1 in the night cap on Saturday at Polar Park.
The Bisons scored three times in the top of the first inning against Brandon Walter for a 3-0 lead. Rafael Lantigua and Ernie Clement both scored on a two-run double by Wynton Bernard. The two RBIs increased Bernard's total to 15 on the season. He would eventually score on a Tyler Heineman RBI single for the three-run advantage.
The lead would expand to four runs thanks to a Davis Schneider sacrifice fly in the top of the second frame that gave Buffalo a 4-0 lead. However, Walter would not allow another run across his five inning start.
Casey Lawrence did not factor in the decision despite five innings of work. Worcester's first run of the game was courtesy of a Ronaldo Hernandez solo home run, his first of the game, trimming the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the second frame.
The WooSox would also tally solo runs in the bottom of the third and fifth innings, respectively, to trail by a run after five, 4-3. Wilyer Abreu belted a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh that tied the game 4-4, forcing extra innings.
The Bisons failed to score their automatic base runner in the top of the inning, setting the stage for the Red Sox in the bottom of the eighth. Hernandez belted a three-run homer to center field that provided the walk-off 7-4 win for Worcester.
The WooSox scored in the bottom of the first, opening up a 1-0 lead against Nick Fraze. They would score back-to-back three run frames for a 7-0 lead through three.
Tanner Morris broke up the shutout bid by Worcester with an RBI groundout in the top of the seventh inning, 12-1. Sean Mellen made his Triple-A debut on the mound after being promoted from New Hampshire. Also, Paul Fry worked 2.1 innings including striking out the side in the bottom of the fifth.
The Bisons will close out their two-week road trip on Sunday with Mitch White making his second Major League injury rehab start on the week. Buffalo and the WooSox will meet for a 1:05 p.m. first pitch.
