Lake Erie Crushers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Jason Taylor hit a pair of homeruns in Wednesday afternoon's contest at Boomers Stadium, as the Crushers took the series finale, with a 10-7 victory over the Schaumburg Boomers.
The homers for Taylor were his ninth and tenth of the season, and he finished the road trip with four homers. The win for the Crushers (29-25) marks the eighth time that they've won a series on the road in nine tries, while the loss for the Boomers (33-21) was their second in six games against the Crushers.
The Crushers scored first, for the first time in the series. Robby Kuzdale was issued a leadoff walk to start the game, and he scored on Daniel Bowman's two out base hit.
Schaumburg answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take their only lead of the contest. They had runners on second and third with two outs, when Chad Mozingo stroked a double to plate both Karexon Sanchez and Frank Pfister.
Lake Erie took advantage of a throwing error and tied the contest at 2-2 in the top of the second. Rich Witten began the inning with a base hit, and scored moments later on Shane Prance's (1-1) throwing error. Wally Correa hit a ball back up the middle, which Prance knocked down, but his throw to first went down the right field line, allowing Witten to score.
The Crushers used solo homers in the third inning to snap a 2-2 tie. Taylor began the inning with his first homerun of the contest, and two batters later, Bowman went deep for the second time on the trip, giving the Crushers a 4-2 lead.
Lake Erie had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth, when Brandon Decker executed a squeeze, and brought Kellen Kulbacki home on the sacrifice bunt, before Taylor smacked a two-run shot to cap Lake Erie's three run inning.
The Crushers added single runs in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings to pull away. Correa and Kuzdale smashed back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, as Correa scored on Kuzdale's two-bagger to add to Lake Erie's advantage. Kuzdale scored on a wild pitch in the eighth, and Bowman came home on Witten's sacrifice fly in the ninth.
The Boomers did add a few more runs, getting solo homers in the sixth inning from Sean Mahley and Steve McQuail. McQuail went deep again, smashing a solo homer in the eighth inning, and they added two more on Mahley's two out double in the ninth.
Trevor Longfellow (6-2) earned his second win of the road trip, tossing six innings, and allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Prance suffered the loss after allowing seven runs, six earned on six hits over four innings of work.
Four Crushers hit safely multiple times, including Taylor, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. He went 9-for-18 on the trip with four homeruns, eight runs scored, and nine RBIs. Witten stroked a pair of singles in the contest, and Kulbacki paced the Crushers with three hits in the contest. Bowman went 2-for-4, and finished the road trip with seven hits, and eight RBIs.
The Crushers will begin a three game series with the Evansville Otters at All Pro Freight Stadium on Thursday night. Left hander Paul Fagan (5-3, 2.73) will start for the Crushers, and the Otters will counter with right hander Wynn Pelzer (0-1, 1.80). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
