Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, resumed play against the Evansville Otters Wednesday afternoon and earned a 12-1 victory.
A power outage in the bottom of the seventh halted the game Tuesday evening. The game resumed at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, prior to the originally scheduled game.
The Otters struck first in the top of the second inning Tuesday to take an early lead. An RBI groundout by left fielder Luis Uribe gave Evansville a quick 1-0 lead.
Washington responded an inning later to tie the game in the bottom of the third. A sharply hit RBI single by shortstop AJ Nunziato drove home Gus Benusa for the Wild Things' first run of the game.
The Wild Things struck again in the bottom of the fourth, when third baseman Taylor Oldham hammered a two-run shot over the left field fence. It was Oldham's fourth homerun of the year, a team high.
Washington led 3-1 after four.
That proved to be plenty for starter Eric Blackwell. Blackwell allowed only three hits and two walks in his seven innings of work. He also allowed only one run while fanning seven Otters. Blackwell's outstanding performance on the mound, backed by plenty of runs, earned him his third victory of the season.
Washington picked up some insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. A four run seventh inning gave the Wild Things a 7-1 lead.
Reliever Chandler Barnard resumed the game for the Wild Things, and pitched a perfect eighth inning. Barnard has been solid as of late, allowing only one earned run in his last 13 innings pitched.
Washington added five more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead to 12-1. Shain Stoner's two-run blast highlighted the inning, along with a two-run double to right field by designated hitter Rick Devereaux.
With a 12-1 lead in the ninth, reliever Steven Grife came on and pitched a perfect ninth, sealing the deal for the Wild Things.
Washington will return home on the July 22nd for a six game homestand. Tickets for the homestand are still available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office, www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866-WILD.
