Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (23-30) vs. GATEWAY GRIZZLIES (28-25)
Wednesday, July 18 - 7:05 p.m. CT
Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL
Game #54 - Home Game #30 (23-30), (11-18)
RHP #28 Jim Schult (4-3, 4.36 ERA) vs. RHP #31 Max Whieldon (0-0, 7.00 ERA)
Last time out.
The Gateway Grizzlies hammered their way to a 9-5 victory over Joliet. Both teams scored a run in the first. Gateway struck early on a Rogelio Noris RBI double, and Kyle Maunus tied it for the Slammers on a single in the home half. Gateway put three across in the third, led off by a solo home run from Antone DeJesus, followed up by a two-run single from Vladamir Frias, making it 4-1. Joliet put the game within one on an Abel Nieves two-run homer. But the Grizzlies broke the game open in the fourth on a bases-clearing double by Noris putting the tally at 7-3, and added another later in the inning on a John Shelby single. Joliet tacked on another pair in the fourth when Brad Netzel brought around Josh Lyon and David Fox to make it 8-5. Gateway notched another in the ninth to give the game its final score. Michal Perconte struggled in the start and took the loss for Joliet.
For Starters.
Jim Schult has won three of his past four starts for the Slammers. His most recent start came on July 13 against the Southern Illinois Miners. In the outing he tossed seven innings of one-run ball and tied the franchise record with 10 strike outs in the game while only walking one. Schult started the year in the bullpen and has excelled since moving into the rotation, posting a 3.31 ERA as a starter. He's gone at least six innings in four of his six starts. Schult brings professional experience to the fold as the Eastern Connecticut State alum spent 2011 in the Canadian-American Association with the NYSL Federals. While at Eastern Connecticut State, Schult was named the D-3 co-national player of the year in 2011.
Going for another series win.
The Slammers are looking to win their third straight series tonight. They are 4-4 in rubber matches this season but have won their past two. The last time they won three straight series was May 25-June 3 when they took back-to-back-to-back series from the Evansville Otters, Lake Erie Crushers and Washington Wild Things.
Win It Wednesday?
When the Slammers win a Wednesday home game, all fans in attendance win a free ticket to the next Wednesday home game. However in 2012 the Slammers are 0-5 in Wednesday home games. Oddly enough they are 2-0 on the road on Wednesdays.
Some relief.
After a rough June (5.74 ERA), the Joliet bullpen has bounced back in July as they currently sport an ERA of 3.70 this month. Overall on the season the Slammers' bullpen has an ERA of 4.35.
Dynamic Duo.
All-Stars Abel Nieves and Hector Pellot hold the team lead in 11 major offensive categories this season. Nieves leads the team in batting average at .354, Hits (64), Home Runs (5), Total Bases (92), OBP (.442), SLG (.508) and OPS (.950). Meanwhile Pellot leads the team in runs scored (42), doubles (15), walks (34), and stolen bases (9).
More walks than strike outs.
Nieves is the only Slammer with more walks (29) than strike outs (18).
Lis on fire in July.
DH and Hitting Coach Erik Lis is hitting .383 so far this July, tops on the team. Lis is still looking to find his power as his four home runs this year are well short of his 20 home run pace from last season.
Error indicator.
The Slammers are 7-24 in games when they make an error. They are 16-6 in games when they do not.
Out-hit.
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 17-7, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 3-22.
