Gateway Grizzlies News Release

JOLIET, IL - Max Whieldon fired seven strong innings and the Gateway Grizzlies held on for a 5-1 win against the Joliet Slammers Wednesday night at Silver Cross Field. It was a seven-inning rain-shortened game that lasted only 1:58. The win gave the Grizzlies the series win and was their sixth in their last eight games.

Whieldon (1-0) earned his first win in a Grizzlies uniform, allowing only one run on six hits. The 6-10 right-hander struck out two and walked only one while throwing 90 pitches.

Gateway (29-25) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two and a half innings.

The Grizzlies struck first for the third time in the series before an out was recorded in the game. Jonathan Johnson and Antone DeJesus started the game with walks and Jerod Yakubik drove in both runners on his first triple of the season. Chris McClendon capped off the Grizzlies first inning scoring with an RBI single the opposite way to left field.

Jon Myers walked and was moved to third on a Johnson double in the second. He came around to score on a Joliet (23-31) throwing error in the outfield.

Rogelio Noris continued his stellar series with a solo home run to deep left field in the third inning. It was the seventh home run of the season for Noris, who finished the series 9-for-13 with six RBI.

The Grizzlies begin a six-game homestand on Thursday night at GCS Ballpark. They take on the west division-leading Shaumburg Boomers, who are four games ahead of Gateway in the division. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
