Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, took the final game of their three game series with the Evansville Otters, 4-1 in seven innings.
Starter Chris Smith earned a team-high sixth victory of the season, allowing only one run on five hits in five innings of work. Smith also fanned six Otters, effectively changing speeds throughout the game.
The Wild Things struck quickly in the bottom of the first, picking up one run to take a 1-0 lead. Left fielder Andrew Heck led off the game with a walk, and later scored on an error by second baseman Taylor Black. Black misplayed a groundball by Rick Devereaux to allow Heck to score.
Washington kept adding to their lead, getting three more runs in the bottom of the third. A two-run single to left center field by Gus Benusa plated Andrew Heck and Michael Bando. Devereaux also picked up an RBI, when he brought home Benusa on a fielder's choice.
Benusa, who was signed on July 13th, has settled in nicely with Washington. Benusa is hitting .500 (9-for-18) over his last five gamesand has scored five runs over that span.
The Wild Things led 4-0 after three.
Evansville was able to get on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Stephen Marino knocked an RBI double down the third base line to score DeAngelo Mack from second. Smith battled back to end the threat, allowing only one run to score in the inning.
Reliever Nick Cicio spelled Smith in the top of the sixth inning, but found himself in a jam early on. A one-out walk to Runey Davis was followed by a double by Mack to put runners on second and third with one out. Cicio stayed calm, and got the next batter to line out to shortstop for the second out. With two-outs, Cicio got catcher Brett Chamberlain to fly out to right to get out of the inning.
Washington headed into the top of the seventh with a 4-1 lead, looking to reliever Orlando Santos to clinch the victory. Santos allowed base runers to reach first and second with two outs, but got Nick Schwaner to pop out the shortstop to seal the deal.
The Wild Things will head to Southern Illinois for a three game series from July 19th-21st. They will return home on the July 22nd for a six game homestand. Tickets for the homestand are still available at the CONSOL Energy Park box office, www.washingtonwildthings.com or by calling 1-866-WILD.
