Beach Bums Sweep Freedom

TRAVERSE CITY,MI-The Florence Freedom(28-26)were swept Wednesday afternoon dropping a 9-2 ballgame to the Traverse City Beach Bums(37-17). The Freedom missed several early scoring opportunities against Beach Bum starter Brooks Belter who improved to 7-1 after limiting the Freedom to 3 hits and 2 runs in his 7 innings of work.
In the 1st inning, Belter hit the lead-off batter Junior Arrojo who was plunked for his league leading 19th time. Arrojo was hit later in the game, to push his total to 20. The Freedom all-star shortstop advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then advanced to third after Peter Fatse reached on an error by Belter. With runners on the corners with one out, Eddie Rodriguez flew out to shallow right field, as Arrojo tried to tag from 3rd base, but was thrown out at the plate by Sean Gusrang to keep the Freedom off the scoreboard. The Freedom threatened again in the 2nd inning, this time with runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, but Belter struck out Victor Gomez and got Esteban Meletiche to ground out to 3rd base.
The Beach Bums scored at least one run in four out of the first five innings against Freedom starter Scott Moviel who suffered his first loss since joining the Freedom. Moviel went 5 innings, giving up 7 hits including a two run homer to Gusrang in the 4th. He also walked two and struck out two in his 3rd start for the Freedom.
With the Freedom trailing 7-0 in the 6th inning, John Malloy stroked a two out, two run double, to break up the shutout by Belter and cut the deficit to 7-2.
The Freedom will continue their 9 game road trip with the start of a 3 game series Thursday night against the River City Rascals in O'Fallon, Missouri. Max Catapano(4-1 4.58) will start for Florence as former Freedom RHP Preston Vancil(2-6 4.18) will go for the Rascals.
