Jackals Increase Division Lead In Shootout Loss To Checkers

The Elmira Jackals upped their lead in the American East Division to nine points on Wednesday night at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y., as the Jackals took the Charlotte Checkers to a shootout which the Checkers won in the ninth round, 2-1.
The game was the first ever between the teams at First Arena, and it was a back-and-forth struggle. The Checkers gained the upper hand first, with a shot from the left point by David Urquhart that found its way through a screen at 14:58 of the first period and beat Jackals goaltender Julien Ellis stick side to make it 1-0 Charlotte.
The Jackals fought back at the 18:07 mark of the second period, when Justin Donati's shot from the left circle found the back of the net with assists going to Tyler Donati, who recorded his league-leading 97th point of the season on the play, and Chaz Johnson, to even the score 1-1.
Both team's battled hard for scoring chances in the final period and five minutes of overtime, but it was not enough so the teams went to a shootout.
Charlotte took a 2-0 advantage after the shootout's first two rounds and after Thomas Beauregard and Matt Schepke scored in the third round had a 3-1 lead after three rounds, but the Jackals came back with goals from Tyler Donati and Chris Korchinski to send the shootout to sudden death. In the ninth round of the shootout, Kevin Schaeffer found the back of the net, beating Ellis glove side, and the Checkers took the extra point with the 2-1 win.
Ellis stopped 33 of 34 Checkers shots in one of his best efforts of the season and is now 13-4-1-1 with the Jackals. Munce made 35 saves on 36 shots, upping his record to 21-13-2-1 in 2009-2010.
The Jackals record is now 34-21-4-3 on the season, while the Checkers broke a tie for the fifth spot in the conference with Florida with the victory, improving to 36-20-4-3.
