Checkers Sign Zemlak; Marshall Recalled To Lake Erie

CHARLOTTE, NC-Charlotte Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has signed goaltender Garrett Zemlak to an amateur tryout. In addition, forward David Marshall was recalled to the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League.

Zemlak, 20, recently wrapped up a four-year junior career with the Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League. In 57 games with the Raiders this season, Zemlak posted a 26-25-4 record with a 3.11 goals against average and.909 save percentage, leading the team in wins, GAA, save percentage and shutouts.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound netminder was named Prince Albert's Most Valuable Player, Most Inspirational Player and won the Molson Cup Three Star Award. He was also runner-up for the WHL's Eastern Conference Goaltender of the Year honors.

Zemlak led the Raiders in wins in 2008-09 with 16 despite only playing in 33 games. He posted a 16-12-1 record with a 3.65 GAA and.896 save percentage. He is expected to join the team in Elmira for tonight's contest.

Marshall is currently on a four-game point streak (4g, 3a) and notched a hat trick in Thursday's 5-4 win over Gwinnett. The 25-year-old winger has 19 goals and eight assists in 48 games this season, his first as a professional. He began the season in Lake Erie, where he tallied two goals and an assist in 14 games before being re-assigned to Charlotte.

The Checkers (35-20-7) will travel to Elmira tonight and Reading tomorrow before returning on Friday to host Trenton.
