Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, Pa. - January 19, 2013 - The Elmira Jackals were defeated 6-1 by the Reading Royals on Saturday night at the Sovereign Center. The loss dropped Elmira's record to 20-17-4 on the season.
The first period got off to a rocky start for the Jackals as they found themselves shorthanded just 32 seconds into the game. Despite the tough start the Jackals killed off the Reading power play and limited the Royals to just one shot on the advantage. The Royals were able to strike first, though, when an Ethan Cox shot from low on the left wing eluded Maxime Clermont low to the glove side. The Jackals found themselves in penalty trouble again and took two more minors by the midway point of the first. Clermont and the killers were persistent, though, and didn't allow Reading to build its lead. When Elmira was awarded its first power play of the night, defenseman Justin DaCosta took advantage and scored his first goal of the season to knot the score at one. Justin Daniels and Clermont assisted on the goal at 14:18. Adam Comrie restored Reading's lead, though, 3:57 later with a wrist shot from the right wing circle and the Royals went into the dressing room with a one goal lead.
In the second the Jackals were limited to five shots and saw the deficit grow larger with Reading scoring a pair of goals. The first came off of the stick of Comrie with Reading on the power play. He took a cross-ice feed on the right wing and one-timed the puck past Clermont for his 15th goal of the season. A minute and 53 seconds later, from behind Elmira's net, David Marshall banked a puck off of a Jackals defender's skate through Clermont's pads for a 4-1 lead. The Jackals drew a late power play in the second and started the third with 1:40 of power play time.
With the advantage the Jackals managed a pair of shots on goal, but neither found their way past Reading's Brandon Anderson. Kirk MacDonald continued Reading's offensive surge with a tally at 10:58 of the third to stretch the advantage to 5-1. Yannick Tifu finished off the scoring with a penalty shot goal at 15:11 for his 16th of the campaign.
Clermont shouldered the loss while stopping 33 of 39 shots. The Jackals ended the night 1-for-4 on the power play and 6-for-7 on the penalty kill.
