Colorado Eagles News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign edged the Colorado Eagles, 3-2, in a game that saw all but one goal scored via the power play. Mario Lamoureux opened up and closed out the scoring for the Pacific Division leaders, and Colton Yellow Horn recorded a goal and an assist to take over the league lead with 50 points. Colorado will play in Las Vegas Saturday night before the league's attention turns to Northern Colorado for the 2013 ECHL All-Star Week, presented by CCM, next week.
Ontario got on the board first by taking advantage of an early miscue by the Eagles. Just under three minutes in, Aaron Schneekloth attempted to chip the puck in deep from center ice, but his clearing effort went directly into the chest of a pressuring Lamoureux. The puck then fell right in front of the forward as he continued his momentum toward the Eagles' end and he picked it up behind the defense for a clear breakaway that ended with a shot past Kyle Jones.
But the Eagles battled back behind their league-leading power play, and it was Schneekloth who atoned for his mistake with a tying goal at 11:46. Just five seconds after a 5-on-3 advantage expired, Michael Forney found the veteran defenseman sneaking into the low slot for a shot past Jean-Francois Berube. And just three minutes later, Colorado's other veteran blueliner, Jason Beatty, put the visitors on top by putting home a rebound from the left circle on another man advantage.
The second period saw the game's third power-play goal in a row, this time by the Reign to tie the game back up at 2. At 12:18, the league's leading goal-scorer -- by a wide margin -- Yellow Horn, was found wide open in the right circle for a shot past Jones' shoulder.
Five and a half minutes into the final frame, Ray Kaunisto was called for a pair of penalties on the same play, giving the Reign four minutes worth of a double-minor power play. Four seconds after the first penalty expired, Lamoureux picked up a rebound off a lively endboard and tucked it inside the right post for what would end up being the game-winner. Yellow Horn picked up an assist on the tally, moving him into the league points lead ahead of Chad Costello, who left the Eagles' roster for the AHL over five weeks prior.
