Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Les Walrond threw six strong innings and Josh Wilson extended his team-high hitting streak to 14 games as the Albuquerque Isotopes (25-21) defeated the Tucson Sidewinders (25-21), 6-2, at Tucson Electric Park Tuesday night. Mark Little and Josh Willingham each homered for the âTopes, who snapped a two-game slide.
Walrond (2-2) won his first decision since April 8 by limiting the Sidewinders to two runs on nine hits while striking out four. Tucson lefty Bill Murphy (1-1) took the loss for Tucson after surrendering four runs, three earned, in six innings. Wilson waited until his last at-bat to extend his hitting streak and made the most of it with an RBI-double in the eighth inning.
Little and Willingham each homered in a three-run fifth inning that rallied the Isotopes from a 2-1 deficit. Little led off with a solo shot, his 12th of the year, to left field that tied the game. Derek Wathan kept the rally going with an infield single but was forced out when Mike Colangelo banged into a fielder's choice. After a fly out, Willingham put the âTopes up for good with his second homer in three games â it was also his 12th of the season â that gave Albuquerque a 4-2 advantage. Wilson's double scored Willingham in the eighth inning and Matt Padgett plated Derek Wathan in the ninth to close out the scoring for the game.
Tucson took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI-double by Kelly Stinnett before the Isotopes briefly tied the game with a run in the following inning when Colangelo scored Little on a sacrifice fly. But the Sidewinders regained control in the home half thanks to a run-scoring double by Brian Barden.
The Isotopes will take on Tucson in the third game of a four-game series Wednesday night at 7:30. Right-handed pitcher Peter Bauer (1-3, 6.90) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque against Tucson righty Edgar Gonzalez (4-1, 2.97).
Albuquerque will return to Isotopes Park, site of the 2007 Triple-A All-Star Game, for Memorial Day weekend that is packed with great promotions and activities. The weekend kicks off is style on Friday, May 27, with a visit by the Zooperstars! and continues with post-game fireworks on both Saturday and Sunday.
