OMAHA – A pickoff throw to first base by an Omaha reliever that was perhaps milliseconds late helped Fresno pick up two eighth inning runs to break a 2-2 tie and down the Royals 4-2 in front of 1,739 fans Tuesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

With one out in the top of the eighth and Mickey Lopez at first base following a single, Shawn Camp wheeled and fired a perfect pickoff throw to Chad Santos, but Lopez made a head first dive back to the bag and was called safe. Camp wound up walking Todd Linden, but then got Mike Cervenak to ground out, which would have been the third out of the inning had Lopez been picked off. As it was, Tony Torcato was intentionally walked to load the bases and Yamid Haad came through with a two-out, two-run single to right.

The Royals brought the potential winning run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. Fresno lefty Jack Taschner struck out the left-handed hitting Santos to open the frame, but then walked Alejandro Prieto. Lefty-swinging Jaime Jones then whiffed for the second time in the game, making him 0-for-15 with eight strikeouts on the home stand. However, Adrian Brown coaxed a walk to bring Aaron Guiel to the plate. Guiel, who has a club-leading ten home runs with five coming in his last ten games, wound up striking out as Taschner notched his second save.

Jeremy Fikac (2-1) got the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Camp fell to 0-and-3 with Omaha since coming down from Kansas City.

Both club's starters were impressive. Matt Cain, regarded as the San Francisco Giants' top prospect, showed why as the 20-year old right-hander allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings, walking two and striking out nine Royals. Jimmy Gobble, who had lost each of his last four starts and came in with an 8.80 ERA, may have turned his season around by working a season-high seven innings and giving up only four hits and two runs. Gobble walked two and struck out five.

Paul Phillips went 3-for-4, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Justin Gemoll was 2-for-4 and is hitting .473 (26-55) over his last 15 contests.

The Royals (21-25), now 3-3 on the home stand and 1-1 this series, battles Fresno (20-26) Wednesday at 7:05: RH Jerome Williams (1-3, 9.12) vs. RH Dennis Tankersley (1-4, 6.82). Air time is 6:45 p.m. on Magic 1490 and www.Oroyals.com.
