Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - J.J. Furmaniak matched a career high with five hits and Bobby Scales homered for the third straight game as the Portland Beavers defeated the Nashville Sounds 10-5 Monday night at PGE Park.

Furmaniak, who had two RBIs and scored twice, has now hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and raised his average from .233 to .258 with his five-hit effort, the first of the year for the Beavers (20-22) and the first since Ben Petrick tallied five hits at Edmonton on April 30, 2004.

Scales, who homered in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader sweep over Memphis, was 2-for-3 and reached base four times by adding a pair of walks. Scales leads the Beavers with 27 RBIs and is 6-for-9 with three homers and seven RBIs over the last three games. His two-run blast in the sixth gave Portland a 7-2 lead.

Ben Johnson clubbed a two-run homer and Jon Knott added three hits for the Beavers, who have won three straight for the first time since their opening homestand in April.

Marty McLeary (3-2) managed the victory, despite a bit of trouble in the seventh.

Prince Fielder clubbed a pair of solo home runs for the Sounds (22-23), who have lost four in a row to fall below .500 for the first time this season. Justin Lehr (4-4) suffered the loss in his first start since Aug. 24, 2001.

The Beavers had Lehr on the hook early, loading the bases on the first three batters in the first and plating runs on Knott's RBI single and a sac fly to right by Adam Hyzdu.

Johnson upped the advantage in the third with a two-run shot to left off Lehr, who was chased the next inning after Furmaniak drove home a run to give the Beavers a 5-0 lead.

Fielder's home runs aside, McLeary managed to keep the Sounds in check until the seventh. With two outs in the inning, though, Nashville put a pair of runners on and pulled to within 7-5 on Dave Krynzel's double and a two-run triple by Rickie Weeks.

Portland added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and one in the eighth.

The Beavers and Sounds continue their series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Scales' home run was his sixth of the year, a new career high for the seven-year professional ... the last time Furmaniak had five hits in a game was May 5, 2003, when he went 5-for-6 with three doubles and five runs scored in a game against Lancaster while with Class A Lake Elsinore in the Padres system ... Furmaniak is the sixth different Portland batter with a five-hit effort in the team's five seasons back in the PCL.
