Sidewinders take series opener from Isotopes, 7-3

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Sidewinders took game one of a four game set against the Isotopes 7-3 behind a solid outing by starting LHP Chris Michalak. The Sidewinders jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as both 1B Conor Jackson and LF Josh Kroeger doubled in the inning. The Isotopes tied the game up in the top of the forth 2-2 but the tie did not last long as the Sidewinders added a pair of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-2. The Isotopes and Sidewinders traded runs in the fifth to make the score 5-3. The Sidewinders added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a homerun to left field by RF Carlos Quentin that scored 1B Conor Jackson to make the score 7-3. Albuquerque was not able to score in the top of the ninth and the Sidewinders won 7-3.

The offensive players of the game for the Tucson were 1B Conor Jackson and RF Carlos Quentin. Jackson went 2-for-3 with 3 runs, 2 doubles and a walk. Quentin added in 2 hits in four at bats and had 2 runs, a triple, a homerun and 3 RBI.

The winning pitcher for the Sidewinders was LHP Chris Michalak, who went 6 1/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 8 hits, 2 runs, and 2 strikeouts. The win improves Michalak to 2-3 on the season and drops his ERA from 5.44 to 5.29.

The Sidewinders with the win move to 25-20 on the season and remain one game ahead of Sacramento for the division lead. The series continues tomorrow at Tucson Electric Park with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 PM. The scheduled starting pitchers for tomorrow are LHP Bill Murphy (1-0, 4.80) for the Sidewinders and LHP Les Walrond (1-2, 4.78) for the Isotopes.
