Salt Lake Bees News Release
SALT LAKE CITYâThe Stingers evened up their current road trip at three wins and three losses with an improbable victory this afternoon at Zephyr Field. Salt Lake rallied for three runs in the top of ninth on back-to-back home runs by Brian Gordon and Nick Gorneault to tie the game at 5-5. The Stingers exploded for four unearned runs in the top of the tenth to beat New Orleans 9-5 Tuesday.
SLAMMIN' STINGERS: On Saturday May 21, Brian Gordon belted a grand slam in the Stingers' 9-1 victory over the Oklahoma Redhawks. Gordon's grand slam was the fourth hit by the Stingers this season. Salt Lake hit only three grand slams in all of the 2004 season.
TOP PERFORMANCES: Brian Gordon is batting .294 (5-for-17) with four runs scored, seven RBI and two home runs in the six games on this road trip. Jeff Mathis has also belted two home runs on the trip with three RBI and seven runs scored. Nick Gorneault extended his hitting streak to seven games this afternoon and is batting .348 (8-for-23) with seven runs scored, eight RBI and two home runs on the current road trip.
ROSTER MOVES: On Saturday May 21, the Angels placed Vladimir Guerrero, the 2004 American League MVP on the 15-day disabled list with a partial dislocation of his left shoulder. The Angels purchased the contract of outfielder Curtis Pride from Salt Lake. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, the Angels placed RHP Brett Prinz from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. On Monday May 23, the Angels placed closer Francisco Rodriguez on the 15-day DL (retroactive to May 15) due to a strained right forearm. To replace Rodriguez on the 25-man roster, the Angels selected the contract of Stingers' closer Joel Peralta from Salt Lake. To make room for Peralta on the 40-man roster, OF Chris Prieto was designated for assignment. If Prieto is not claimed by another team on waivers, he will be eligible to be activated on the Stingers' roster on Wednesday. Also on Monday May 23, after the game against the White Sox, the Angels optioned RHP Kevin Gregg to Salt Lake and recalled RHP Chris Bootcheck from the Stingers. Infielder Larry Infante was added to the Stingers' roster from extended spring training in Mesa, AZ. Salt Lake's roster currently stands at 22 players, two players short of the PCL maximum 24 players.
NAIL BITERS: Four of the six games on the road trip have been decided by two or less runs. The Stingers have rallied for three runs in the ninth inning in each of their games in New Orleans. On Monday night, Salt Lake was one out away from a two-run victory, but Matt Cepicky hit a three-run walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Zephyrs the 7-6 win.
QUICK WORK: The Stingers have played 21 of their 22 games in the month of May in less than three hours. The last game that went longer than three hours was on May 4 at Portland (3:03). The shortest game of the season was on May 7, a 3-2 loss at Tacoma (2:02).
COMING UP: The Stingers continue the current road trip, finishing up their series in New Orleans before heading to Sacramento to take on the 2003 & 2004 PCL Champion River Cats for a four-game series. Salt Lake returns home on Tuesday May 31 for a 12-game homestand.
