PORTLAND – For the second night in a row, the Portland Beavers had an answer for every Nashville offensive tally and sent the Sounds to their fifth straight loss on the short end of a 7-5 decision on Tuesday evening at PGE Park in the second game of a four-game series.

Prince Fielder homered for the third time in the last two games and extended the Sounds' longest active hitting streak to seven games with a 2-for-4 evening in the losing effort.

Former Sound Adam Hyzdu didn't help Nashville's cause, throwing out two runners from his post in left field during the game. The veteran stifled Nashville's first attempt to score, throwing out Fielder at the plate for the final out of the first inning as he attempted to score from second on Kevin Orie's single. Hyzdu later gunned down Brad Nelson at second in the eighth as the outfielder attempted to stretch a single into a double.

Nashville (22-24) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against Portland starter Justin Germano. With one out, the red-hot Corey Hart doubled, moved to third on a groundout, then scored the game's first run on a wild pitch.

Just as they had done in the series opener on Monday evening, the Beavers quickly answered the Sounds' tally with a big inning of their own in the bottom of the second. Jon Knott, Bobby Scales, and Hyzdu opened the inning with three consecutive doubles off Nashville starter Jose Capellan to propel the home team to a 2-1 lead. Later in the frame, Kerry Robinson delivered a two-out, two-run single to extend the advantage to 4-1.

The Sounds continued the back-and-forth scoring in the third when they tied the contest on Fielder's third home run of the series, a three-run, opposite-field blast to left off Germano that made it a 4-4 game. The roundtripper – the first baseman's sixth of the season – brought in Dave Krynzel and Trent Durrington, who had walked and singled, respectively, to open the frame.

Portland answered the Nashville outburst once again in their half of the inning, grabbing the lead on a Jesse Garcia sacrifice fly. The Beavers used another sacrifice fly in the fifth to increase the advantage to 6-4.

Sounds catcher Julio Mosquera greeted Portland reliever R.D. Spiehs by belting his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left in the sixth that made it a 6-5 game.

However, Portland had an answer yet again, scoring a run of its own in the bottom of the frame against Nashville reliever Mike Meyers. Robinson led off the inning with a pop-up to short right that was lost in the lights by Durrington, the second baseman, and Hart, the right fielder. The ball fell behind both players, resulting in a double. Ben Johnson drove in Robinson with an RBI single later in the frame to reinstate the two-run Beavers lead.

Neither starter was particularly efficient in the contest. Germano (2-5) allowed four runs on seven hits over five innings to pick up the win, while Capellan (3-2) gave up five runs on seven hits in five frames in absorbing the loss. Brad Baker came on to toss a perfect ninth for Portland to earn his league-leading 13th save of the season.

The teams continue their series with a 2:05 p.m. CT matinee on Wednesday afternoon. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (1-4, 4.14) mans the bump for Nashville to face Portland right-hander Clay Hensley (0-1, 2.42).
