Isotopes Split Doubleheader, Series at Las Vegas

NEED TO KNOW: The Albuquerque Isotopes (38-48) split Tuesday night's doubleheader against the Las Vegas 51s (48-38), winning game one 3-0 but losing game two 3-1. With the split, the two teams also halved their four-game series.

WHAT HAPPENED, GAME ONE: Right-handed pitcher Jon Gray dominated the 51s for six innings Tuesday night, allowing just three hits. He also struck out eight batters against just two walks. Gray teamed up with left-hander Rex Brothers to shutout Las Vegas. It is Albuquerque's third shutout of the season. The Isotopes quickly took momentum in the game when Cristhian Adames singled with two outs in the first. Kyle Parker then followed with an RBI double and scored on another single by Dustin Garneau. Albuquerque added another run in the fourth when Garneau scored on a groundout.

WHAT HAPPENED, GAME TWO: The Isotopes again jumped on the board first in game two with a run in the second when Angelys Nina stole third and then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Las Vegas lumped together a three-run third behind former Isotope Alex Castellanos' two-run home run that stole the momentum and the game.

50 SHADES OF GRAY: Right-handed pitcher Jon Gray continued his recent hot streak in game one. He tossed six innings of three-hit, shutout ball. Gray had eight strikeouts against just two walks. The quality start was Gray's 10th of the season and ninth in his last 10 outings. He threw 63 of his 99 pitches for strikes.

ATTA BOY ADAMES: Cristhian Adames continued his recent streak, going a combined 2-for-5 with a run scored on the evening. He had singles in both games. During his last 11 games, Adames is now batting .500 (25-for-50) with nine runs scored, four doubles, two homers and 12 RBI.

GOING, GOING, GARNEAU: Catcher Dustin Garneau got the start in game one and went 2-for-3 with a run scored. During his last 17 games, Garneau is now batting .364 (24-for-66) with 14 runs scored, six doubles, six homers, 18 RBI and six walks. He's also only struck out seven times during that stretch.

STREAK NUMBERS: Albuquerque's two wins in the series were its first two of the year against Las Vegas. The 51s swept the previous two series against the Isotopes. Albuquerque has now won seven of its last 10 games overall. The Topes longest losing streak to a single team is 11 games to Oklahoma City, which is currently active. The Isotopes longest winning streak against a single opponent is also 11 games against Las Vegas from 2003-05.

ON DECK: The Isotopes will continue their nine-game road trip to El Paso where they will conclude the pre- All-Star break slate. Right-handed pitcher Eddie Butler (1-2, 6.67 ERA) is scheduled to start for Albuquerque, while the Chihuahuas will go with right-hander Colin Rea (0-0, 19.29 ERA).
