Iowa Falls 7-2 at Omaha in Series Opener

PAPILLION, Neb. (July 8, 2015) - Omaha scored in five of its eight turns at bat Wednesday night as the Storm Chasers (47-39) defeated the Iowa Cubs (45-41) 7-2 in Pacific Coast League action at Werner Park. The loss snapped Iowa's three-game winning streak.

Kyle Schwarber clubbed a solo home run in the first inning to get Iowa on the board. The I-Cubs added another run in the second on an RBI single from Anthony Giansanti. However, Omaha's pitching shut down the I-Cubs from there. Iowa managed just one baserunner after the second inning on a Taylor Davis walk in the seventh.

Omaha starter Andy Ferguson (2-2) allowed two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings to earn the win. Right-hander Matt Murray tossed 3.0 scoreless innings in relief of Ferguson to earn his first save.

Iowa starter Felipe Paulino (1-5) suffered the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Paulino allowed a single run in each of the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Omaha added three more runs in the eighth inning on a Brett Eibner three-run homer off Cubs left-hander Joe Ortiz.

Omaha outhit Iowa 11-3. Eibner led the charge with three hits and five RBI. Jose Martinez clubbed a home run as part of a two-hit night. Reymond Fuentes went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Schwarber, Giansanti and Jonathan Mota had each had a hit for Iowa.

The I-Cubs and Storm Chasers will play game two of a five-game series Thursday night at Werner Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Frank Batista (0-2, 6.00) is scheduled to start for Iowa against Omaha left-hander John Lamb (9-1, 2.62 ERA).
